Mid-engine!! I love the Bell P-39 Airacobras & P-63 King Cobras. ***** looking birds. They didn't perform as well at higher altitudes as other Fighters, but they carved a niche at lower level & ground attack. Having that drive shaft under the *** must have always been on the Pilots minds
Yeah, P-39 could struggle to 30,000 but efficiency started dropping off @ 15,000. The blooper is that the prototype WAS turbo-supercharged, but NACA dropped the ball & eliminated the turbo-supercharger relagating the Allison to normal aspiration. Committees,,, go figure.I think they were capped at around 20K
The Japanese Zeros were good for 30K
4 bladed prop on that bf-109,,a late variant. The last variant of 109 had an initial cliimb rate of 6500 fpm!
