Last time you will hear the largest US built engines running four at a time. These were used in the B-36.
The big Martin Mars isn't part of this year's firefighting action so far, it's out of service until August due to some hull damage. British Columbia has had a lot of wildfires already this summer (over 220 at a time on some days) with about 40,000 people being evacuated from their towns. Closed highways makes travel harder, the smoke from the fires was reaching Vancouver on Tuesday.
Wayne Coulson, owner of both the Hawaii Mars and Philippine Mars had wanted to sell the Philippine Mars to a museum in Florida, going so far as to have it repainted in the old Navy colors. However, he's fighting government problems about the move... It's not a Canadian designed airplane, I really don't see what the problem is.
Ah yes, pistons sound great. The rumble of a radial, the beautiful tuned pitch of a Merlin V-12...but what of the nearly silent steam powered plane that the Besler brothers had in the air in 1933? So quiet that you could hear conversations from the ground, with a prop that could run in reverse for braking after landing, check out this 150 hp. wonder.Got to F-4's in DaNang in full after-burner takeoff mode a couple times,, but still for me nothing sounds better than a piston engine!
