For Jimi- I remember a story of USAF planes being weighed before&after a repaint to make sure the paint was not too thick. Any truth to that?(too thick wouldn't transfer heat as good?)
Yes, watching the weight of paint is among critical calculation for the fact of weight it self. But what You said about thick material impeding heat disappation is accurate observation......hell, over abundant material thickness is a pain in bodywork & refinishing for that very reason, can't shed heat fast enough & warpage, distortion can occur.
Remember American Airlines
Airplanes were mostly natural aluminum finish until a few years ago? They did that to save weight & get a little more payload capacity. I guess they got tired of keeping polishing crews going finally & made the move to full paint. I looked real quick on line & a figure for a paint job on a 777 was 555 lbs after cured......1000 lbs wet.(thats probably a minimum base coat with a trim color) It takes paint a very long time to vent off all of its solvent....paint vents for a year in outside exposure. The reason American is going to full paint is the new birds like 787 are largely composite.

The photo You posted is a photoshop,,,,,Photon caught me up when i posted same pic a couple years ago. The K-7 was a behemoth, but not as exaggerated in size & armament as the photoshop pic. Wingspan was around 180 feet, 6 pulling V-12's & 1 or 2 pusher V-12's (a gray piece of history) There was only a single prototype that made about 10 flights before crash & burn & soon after entire program was shut down. Instability & vibration in airframe sympathethic to harmonic resonance of powerplants was the achilles heel.
