The late 60's-mid 70's was the heyday for private plane ownership. That's when my dad started flying. This taxiway at Norwood (MA) airport was lined wingtip to wingtip with privately owned light aircraft & today, those same tie downs are vacant.

Bell P-39 Airacobra. 1st picture is the XP-39 prototype in which the mid mounted Allison V-12 WAS supercharged. Also note the smaller, different shaped vertical fin & rudder than that of the production Birds in other photos.
The powers that were made the erroneous decision to NOT supercharge production P-39s which resulted in poor performance at higher altitudes, limiting the P-39's versatility. The Russians however had great success with Airacobra & were the users of the majority of planes built. Also the P-39 was the first tri-cycle geared fighter. The propeller driveshaft went through cockpit underneath pilots seat and forward right between his legs(YIKES).
A sexy looking Bird IMO.....gotta love the mid-engined airplane.....

the P-39 was supercharged, however it was a single stage blower. The original plans called for an additional General Electric turbocharger, and it was later dropped for a variety of reasons. However, the P-63 Kingcobra did get the additional boost and with 1,800 hp. managed 410 mph. at 25,000 feet. With a redesigned wing and larger all-over, the Soviets came over to Bell and helped to design it. They then snapped up about 2,400 of them, 3/4 of the production total.
