The exhaust flames are from a rich fuel mixture during takeoff with full power applied.
They “go away” once a 10% lean mixture is established during cruise power settings.
I used to watch those fly over our house as a kid during the 60s, flown by Trans-Canada Airlines (now Air Canada). By the time they went overhead they were only a couple of minutes from their takeoff run at the airport (YVR).
