Is that a Hawker Fury? If so, they had one of the most complicated engines put in that period aircraft. Supercharged sleeve valve radial. The engine has a crankshaft to run all the pistons, and another one to run all the sleeve valves. The sleeve valve engine was invented and developed by a guy named Knight and saw limited use in automobiles.
There used to be an aircraft restoration facility at Goderich, Ontario, and had a Sea Fury there for some maintenance. They had the cowling off the engine, and I was astounded at the complexity of that, then 60-year-old engine. I think that if the pilots realized how many separate pieces were whizzing around in that engine, they would be afraid to fly it.
