February, 1945: A U.S. Navy Grumman TBM-3 Avenger of Torpedo Squadron 82 "Devil's Diplomats" in flight after the plane above it in her formation was shot down by anti-aircraft fire near Chichi Jima and fell on this Avenger, breaking off the left wingtip and cracking the fuselage just ahead of the tail. The damaged plane was flown by its pilot about 160 km back to its task group but had to crash land in the water. All three crew members were rescued . . .

Humor out at sea: The Naval tradition of ZAPPING

It’s a long-standing US Naval custom that should a pilot unintentionally land on the wrong aircraft carrier, their comrades make every effort to keep the occurrence under wraps to avoid publicizing the situation. Of course, there have been instances where they’ve made an exception and opted to send the hapless aviator back to his proper carrier with a generous dose of humbling, whole-plane "nose art"

The P-51B Mustang “Berlin Express” achieved legendary status in an epic World War II dogfight in Paris in 1944, piloted by Bill Overstreet, who flew the aircraft under the Eiffel Tower in hot pursuit of a of a Luftwaffe Messerschmitt Bf 109.
