It's amazing how "basic", compared to today's, this "jet engine" was & that it worked.
 
Although Germany was noted for being the only country to put a rocket powered airplane into production and field use (the Me-163 Komet), the Soviet Union came close. Having nine prototypes built for the Mereznyak-Isayev BI-1 rocket fighter, with a first flight in 1942, they didn't get a proper rocket engine design done by the time it was realized that turbine jets were going to be the way of the future. It did show some promise however, with an engine below design specs giving it a speed of 419 mph. and a good climb rate of 16,300 feet per minute.
