Who Likes Aircraft ?

today is the 15th anniversary of the passing of one of America's best WWII fighter pilots Colonel Francis "Gabby" Gabreski . I got to attend his wake to pay my respects _DSC2348.jpg_DSC2347.jpggabby.jpg

Gabby was a POW in Germany when he had a prop strike during a strafing run. He was flying THAT low !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If memory serves me correctly, he didn't have to fly his last mission, since he had completed his tour.

He went anyway............................

He also flew F-86 Saber's in Korea.

A true American hero.

He was credited with 6.5 Mig 15 kills in Korea

Bless You polywideblock, Dorniers are favorites, the Dornier boats are all beautiful, but this Dornier is iconic, just one badd, badd assed bitch!
Thanks for the lead on the Horton Photon

remember reading that they had a "problem" with the airframe, it was "porpoiseing " or going serpentine while flying straight and level , seems that ALL modern fighters have instability built in to them. could the germans have been on the verge of discovering yet another first , that instable aircraft make good fighters :eusa_think:

Lears have a "tumble" problem, the elevator trim servos werk overtime. Twenty & thirty series i know from being there, cant say with 45 & 60's. Many military birds were sketchy because limiting control surface area to overcome drag so sloe flight characteristics arent for neophytes. My favoite a/c the Martin B-26 is notoripusly unstable under 150, compounded by the worry of critical engine out on take off and low altitude not enough to recover. Landing spd of that bird is 130 mph. The CAF lost Caroline in 2008 in this manner: lving airshow, loaded w Guests from England....
Made low exit pass @ speed, lost the right engine....those Curtiss Electrics swing over 14 ft...rolled right over on Her back to right side and no alt to recover. My Old Man eas a Martin test pilot in wwll, he said the bitch could be pure evil but performed like a hot knife thru butter in her element.....short wings scored major dogfigjt kills.

The 500 mph. Canadian Avro Jetliner has the record for delivering the first Jet airmail, on a run from Toronto to New York City in 1950. Here's the plane, and a shot of it flying over New York. This jet woke up the people over at Boeing who started designs for the Dash 80, later 707.

Looks like a Mitsubishi A5M early WWII Japanese fighter aircraft
Reason being:
The "Vertical" begins before the "Horizontal"

On the Zed's or Zeros' the rear Horizontal wing begins at the vertical tail.

It's a F4U Corsair. The rudder and elevators are gone..........

Take a close look at the tail section of the Corsair in this photo and you can see it................

This is one that was recovered from the Great Lakes and is now at Pensacola getting restored.

On the early Corsairs the outer wing panels were fabric covered.

as were the elevators and rudder. The fabric doesn't hold up well under salt water submersion.

It is hard to sometimes determine what kind of aircraft it is, especially when parts are missing, damaged beyond recognition or deteriorated.

and the name sake for which they call the new "Hellcat" Challengers..........................

Grumman F6F Hellcat from the "Iron works". They called this plane the "Ace Maker" because more pilots become an ace while flying it in combat than any other American type during WW2.

I think Chrysler picked a good name for the Challenger don't you???????????

After all the Ford Mustang was named after this plane..........................
