Those English Electric Canberra bombers were quite advanced for their time. First flown in 1949, they held a lot of records in their day. In 1951 they were the first jet to fly non-stop across the Atlantic. They were also good for altitude, managing 70,310 feet in 1957, another world record. The US liked them enough to build their own (Martin B-57), three of which are used to this day by NASA for high altitude experiments, not bad for a design from the 1940s.
I wonder how many old ME-262 pilots were still around when the Starfighter entered service with the Luftwaffe in July 1960, fifteen years after the war ended.
