Although everyone knew the North American F-86 Sabre, here in Canada we built our own. Canadair produced them under license, most of them had more powerful engines (Orenda) than the US General Electric. When Jacqueline Cochran broke the woman's speed records in 1953, she used the faster Canadian version. In total, over 1800 of these were built for the RCAF, RAF, the German air force, South Africa and 60 for the USAF.

F-86 is a pretty a/c.

After the Canadair Sabre was considered obsolete and the Arrow was scrapped, Canadair once again went to work building more fighters...this time it was the Starfighter. A couple hundred of these CF-104 fighters were produced for Canada starting in 1961, plus 140 more for Lockheed. Once again, Orenda engines were used but this time they were practically the same thrust as the US versions. For NATO use Canada had eight squadrons of them in Europe. In combat, Canada generally used these as low level attackers, operating at 100 feet off the deck which made them very hard to shoot down. The RCAF operated these for about 25 years, giving the remainders to Turkey in 1986. One of my favourite aircraft.

When i was in prison in 78, an F-104(sans tip tanks)buzzed across the compound at treetop level and kicked in the afterburner.......it was funny to see half the hardassed convicts hit the deck.

For awhile, when turbojet technology was just starting out, Orenda (Avro's gas turbine division) had the world's most powerful jet engine with their 6,000 lb. thrust model. A year later, Rolls Royce took away the power trophy but for awhile Orenda was having fun.

To do some testing, a Lancaster was chosen (Avro Canada built hundreds of these during the war) and the two outboard Merlins were replaced by the new jet engines. Adding over 150 mph. to the top speed, this hybrid was faster than a P-47.
