Robert Johnson of the Army Aircorps over Europe. After being in a fight his P-47 the aircraft was hit and losing power, he was alone trying to return to base when he was jumped any a FW190. Unable to manuver due to reduced power, the German repeatedly shot up the Jug from the rear. Realizing he had a pigeon, he kept flying up next to check on Johnson, again the German dropped back a fired bursts into the crippled army fighter. Johnson's only defencewas to make himself as small as he could by tucking himself behind the armor plate that was behind his seat of his fighter. If I recall he was injured by scrapneland and bits off metal from the cockpit. After repeated trys to knock down the big fighter, the German gave up, and waved to Johnson as he flew off. Robert Johnson is one of my favorite pilots of all time. He wrote about his career in the Army years later in the book "Thunderbolt." I have a second addition and two other latter copies on my book shelf. Bob died sometime in the past couple of years.
