Eager to show the world that it was relevant, East Germany took up a project to develop its own passenger jet in the 1950s.. The Baade 152 was to be a medium haul 57-72 passenger aircraft, similar in function to the Caravelle.

Powered by four Pirna 014 turbojets, two flying prototypes had different landing gear; the first utilized a center main gear, like the Boeing B-47. The next had outboard gear by the engines.

With a top speed of 570 mph. and a range of 1,200 - 1,500 miles, twenty airframes were already on the production line for the East German airline Deutsche Lufthansa. However, there were problems. The first prototype had crashed, fuel flow problems were discovered, and before the problems were ironed out, the Soviets stopped such work in their satellite states.

Its recognizable leading edge air intakes fed a single engine to propel the craft up to Mach 2.3.

Despite being designed as a high speed interceptor, it proved quite agile as a fighter as well.

It was used by several airforces, including Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Austria. In frontline service since 1960, it remained viable until Austria retired the last ones in 2005

Meanwhile, 100 years ago, Goodyear launched their first of many famous blimps. Although Goodyear had been making airships for the navy as far back as WWI, this was the first that they used for themselves. It was also the very first helium filled blimp; previous uses were in rigid airships.

Goodyear currently maintains a fleet of four blimps these days. They weigh about ten tons, but when filled with helium, just 200 pounds. A slight negative buoyancy helps with handling.

The world's first scheduled airline flights, operating between St. Petersburg and Tampa in Florida, in January 1914. Thomas Benoist designed and flew this seaplane.

Charging $5 per flight, the trip lasted 23 minutes. However, being able to carry just one passenger per trip meant that it wasn't making a profit, and the airline went out of business after three months and 1205 passengers.

With rugged landing gear designed for unpaved airfields, these planes could use regular runways, grass and desert sand. Although partially fabric covered (wings and rear fuselage), the frame was all metal.

Eventually, being conscripted into service in WWII, they were all destroyed with nothing but photos remaining today. Imperial Airways was a predecessor to today's British Airways.

The interior was quite posh for the passengers, including seven course meals, a stand up bar and wall to wall carpets. Pullman train coaches were the design influence.

Cruising speed was just 100 mph. but was still much faster than using trains or ships.

It's not just for cooling, the richer mixture also prevents detonation. For example, the super premium 115/145 avgas used in WWII engines meant 115 octane for lean mixtures, and 145 when full rich.

I know, built an airplane. I was under the impression that that someone thought that they were doing that on purpose for a show.
