I get to spend time with some private jets when I'm not a passenger in the commercial jets. Last week at Gulfstream and Embraer. Neat stuff.
Just a couple hours ago at Scottsdale a Lear jet lost its front gear on landing and hit a Gulfstream 2. Think a couple fatalities.

How cool is that! Notice how the water is disturbed below the plane moments before touchdown.

Yes, I noticed that. Almost like the hull shape was acting like a lifting body.

There are two main categories of boat hulls, planing and displacement. A displacement hull is like a canoe or an oil tanker. The entire hull stays in the water when under power. Interestingly, the maximum speed of a displacement hull can be calculated and cannot be exceeded no matter how much power you put behind it. Which brings us to the second type of hull, the planing hull. The planing hull raises up out of the water as it accelerates (think bass boat), thus having less hydrodynamic drag and requiring less power to accelerate the faster it goes. As these hulls lift, they do generate aerodynamic lift as well as hydrodynamic. A flying boat is most definitely a planing hull!
