The Buff crew were good, and lucky. Enough of the rudder remained to prevent yaw departure. Not so lucky was the Airbus crew and pax: just after 9/11 taking off from JFK, the entire rudder separated, and all perished.
Similarly, when the wing vortices trapped the F-104 chase, and literally dragged it through BOTH rudders of the XB-70, the crew needed the escape capsule. I think some were injured on landing. Theremaining B-70 prototype is in the USAF Museum in Dayton, and IMO, the most exotic airplane ever built, including the SR-71.
