I always lusted over that 10mm Colt.
I think men like to collect things also. Cars, guns, my Sting Ray bikes, art and in my younger days, women.
Right now I have a garage full of Chevy V8s. 2 350's 2 327s, 1 454.

Men have a protector instinct. Guns enable that.
Unlike a missing 10mm wrench, nobody misplaces one of those!

They allow me to challenge myself - guns, cars, and motorcycles. And archery (been doing that since I was 9).
Faster lap times.
Better apexes.
Smoother shifting.
Better running condition (maintenance/tuneup).
Better groupings.
Faster recovery between rounds.
I enjoy the mechanical art. I admire the precision. And I appreciate the purpose.
It's the same reason I love doing concert sound - the constant challenge to do better. In this case, to do a better mix. Get the keys to sound just right, or get the drums to have just the right punch, or get every syllable out of the vocals.
To the original question - I also know plenty of women who love cars and guns (and motorcycles). And, who are just as good if not better than me, with any of them. It's not a gender thing. It's a societal thing.
