Why does Canada have a Maple syrup reserve in the first place?

Ok, but I don't have to go to Canada to get mine, Costco is 4 miles from my house AND mine still has a drip less pour spout that never has the syrup running down the outside.LOL

You shouldn't have to go to Canada - the USA buys 2/3 of our annual production.

It is a labor-intensive exercise if you do your own sugaring and harvesting the old-fashioned ways. There's a store on the way to Rutland that sells sugaring supplies.

We get Maple Syrup down here that is purported to be made in Canada.....sometimes it might be made to a recipe, or even cut from virgin syrup....who knows. But we also get maple flavoured syrup....which is watery by comparison.

Steeve's is the brand we mostly buy here. Beautiful on blueberry and oatmeal pancakes.

It’s all about the Alberta Gold. It’s what keep Canada Running. Your province is one the biggest Equalization payment taker. We provide you with money to keep PEI going. We provide you with jobs when you come out here and work.

we need to stop helping you out. You do nothing for us. If you want to work in Alberta, we take 40% of your wage straight off the top as a deterrent.

I suggest that you should read some of our history. During the Great Depression, Prince Edward Island farmers sent trainloads of potatoes to parts of South and Western Saskatchewan, parts of Alberta and possibly Manitoba. I also think I heard that apples were sent from possibly from New Brunswick and or Nova Scotia. The Eastern part of Saskatchewan always had food.
Why do people from other provinces go to the oil patch? Possible reasons would be.
Not enough Albertan’s to fill the vacancies.
Not enough Albertan’s that want that kind of work. Maybe there are other reasons also.

I bought this one this morning. It was about eight American dollars. I like the dark coloured syrup, and it’s cheaper, to boot.
I used to buy the stuff that comes in a tin can but I haven’t seen it here in a while.

Once anything gets commoditized? (Not sure that's an actual word?) It loses much of its simplicity of pleasure. I stopped into a new micro brewery bar to try their product. 3 hours later and only 2 beers consumed? I felt like I had a BA in chemistry of beer anatomy? I just wanted a beer? Nerds!

P.S. Don't even talk with "Wine" folks on their subject matter? They're even worse!

All Canadian maple syrup has the same regulations to follow: pure maple sap is the only ingredient allowed, no matter what brand name is on the bottle. There are four grades: Golden, Amber, Dark and Very Dark. In Canada, maple syrup must be made entirely from maple sap, and syrup must have a density of 66° on the Brix scale to be marketed as maple syrup. (

Well, I simply must see this for myself!
Immediately ship a gallon of Amber to my wife here so that we may verify the validity of this claim!

This is the amber maple syrup made from northern Minnesota local sugar maples. I believe it's about a 10:1 sap to actual syrup. It's an annual fall thing here. No importing of Canadicrap! (Actually, I'm pretty sure it's the same stuff?)

When I was in Alaska 4 years ago, because they don't have any maple trees, they harvest sap from birch trees, so we bought a sample bottle.

The stuff sucks.

To be honest, all Kirkland brands are made by big name brand companies and are usually outstanding. I don't know and have never found out who makes it , but their Kirkland vanilla ice cream is killer. I buy my gas for my car there, 20 to 25 cents a gallon cheaper. No I don't have stock in the company, but had an *** load of it years ago. The company is run like a fine oiled machine and pays its people well enough that I have grown old with many of its employees. If you want two gallons of ketchup, that's the place to go...................

Birch syrup is vile. Whoever in past history decided to make this stuff was just wrong. It’s slightly bitter, not sweet, and leaves an awful aftertaste. They make and sell small batches of it up here but there’s no real demand for it because nobody actually likes it.
