Why does it take so damn long!!!!!!!

Let me take this opportunity to slam the lying, cheating moron of a Chevy body shop that had my R/T hostage for a year in 1989. Shelly's Auto Service, 4080 Mountain Road, Walnutport, Pennsylvania. Thief. Run.

I LMFAO, sorry for your bad experiences thou...

Thanks guys I'm not the only one with this problem. I'll handle it this weekend ..Pat

My car's been in the shop for five months now for an engine rebuild and change, but that's just life with speed shops as well. This shop does everything from upgrades to total restos, and they don't do reservations. You drop your car off and they get to ti when they get to it. I'm in line behind an 87 Vette and a 69 Camaro, and my car gets worked on when they hit stops on other cars. On the plus side they were able to save me a lot of money by doing my engine work at the same time as four other engines so it all comes down to the number one rule of business which is Fast, Good, and Cheap: you can get two of the three, but never get all three.

i bought a 1973 440 back in November and took it to a shop my cousins friend owns..im building the engine my self but the block needed bored and hot tanked, stuff i couldnt do..its now July and i found out my blocks still sitting in the corner of the shop untouched..my dad went over and looked at it and told them if its not done in 2 weeks were taking the motor somewhere else..its very frustrating, i couldn't imagine if someone had my whole car for that long and put it on the back burner..hope it works out for ya..the car looks damn good in pics..they do good work it looks like

Key words: Cousin/friend.

I got a recommendation from a 69 GTX owner to go to scum-sucking Shelly's in Walnutport. When I finally got the car back, he asked "were those scratches in the rear window before? I said no, it happened at the body shop. He said, "they scratched mine too. Dumb Dutcman idiot. Why the heck didn't he tell me before. Can't trust anyone, Caveat Emptor.

Peoples word

I have been in this business for over 45 years and as time progresses peoples word is getting to the point where it absolutly does't mean anything. I had a 70 Challenger that took 5yrs to the month to get it back from the body shop and everytime you talk to these people they have some kind of excuse. One thing I found you can tell when these people lie, there mouths are moving!!Personally excuses suck if you can't do the job then don't waste each others time and patience AND MONEY.

Sorry to hear that '65, which is exactly why I stopped by the body shop every day. Sometimes twice, once on my way to work (5 in the morning). And once on the way home ( 2-3 pm). Gave him deadlines to hit and paid when it was due to keep him focused. When I picked the car up on 6/24/13, he had to work that Saturday to get it ready. BTW, Gerald had my car from about sept 2012 to June 2013 with about 2ish months back at my shop. It takes time and money. Lots of both.

Finally

Look what made It home finally 22.jpg100.jpgphoto.jpgphoto.jpg

Now its your turn. It is going to be a great looking car. Now for more details what is going in it? I envy you its my dream car.

65 is that a 67 or 68 cougar I see there would it be a eliminator

now boys, just simmer down,I'm sorry Mr. Budnicks, but I have to disagree with you,it is not b.s,that's the way this business is now,I do agree with not taking a resto job to a collision shop because the insurance work and the every day driver, even if it's out of pocket pay has to come first. But taking it to a resto shop does not guarantee a faster turn around. You cannot even stop to take a breath these days because the overhead will freight train you,you have to keep cash flow going. With that being said,if the shop is taking longer that you feel is right, and if it is causing you to lose interest in your project, simply go to the shop, settle any money owed.to the shop or back to you, and remove your project,no need for attitude,I'm sure the shop owner is not giving you the brush off,he just has to do business. One other thing I'm sure if he only worked on your car till completion, and didn't work on any other customers cars, you would'nt be able to afford the restoration...just saying

LOL
Really?

I pulled my 63 Polara out of Phoenix Autobody in Calif-City, CA after 4.5 years.
Its still in primer, missing parts etc.

Ok let me address each reply..first I don't know what year the cougar is but it is an eliminator boss 302 4 speed. An no it's not for sale.. second This guy is not a resto shop nor a bodyshop he does this for side money.. as far as the money he was paid every time he wanted more money. cash the next day no waiting. third 22000.00 and everything is yours

I've worked in the body industry a long time ago, and I have a personal friend who owns the shop where I'm restoring my "X". The biggest problem with body shops, (Collision shops) is that when they
first estimate the job they can't get an accurate number of how many hours it's gonna take to re-manufacture a car! This aint easy! I've under estimated the time it would take to do everything on my car,
and maybe that's because i'm spending far more time because it's mine. A body shop fixes panels. panels take 1.5hrs to paint. some are 2.0hrs. quarters are put on according to hours set by companies
like "Mitchell's" and agreed to by the insurance companies. before a car is worked on there is an estimate written and all parties agree on this "estimate" If it costs a little more, and add order is submitted
to the insurance company. A restoration job is the same as a collision job, except the workscope is much bigger. If you add up all of the hours it will take to do each panel and then add 20% you will be O.K.
but your bill will be astronomical. That's why body shops take so long to do restorations. They really do want to do a nice job but like you say, they get burned out and one day the project feels like a ball
and chain. On to the collision job for three or four days! Please don't give up on your project. She looks too beautifull. At this point you can see what it will be when it's finished. When you drop your car off anywhere to be worked on, get everything in writing. The total $$$$, what's to be done, and when it will be completed. If they can't do that, then keep going down the road. Good luck and love the pic's.

Alleyoop is telling you how it is. Almost all the well known reputable, advertised shops in any town are set up for collision work. They make their bread and butter doing that, it's fast, and it pays better for less work than restorations. I know it sounds like a LOT of money when you start talking $40k for labor for a restoration, but actually sit down and think how long some of the work is going to take?

Just take an example... headlight bezel is hazed white anodizing. Do you replace it with a repop and the car is no longer original or do you straighten the original, buff and reanodize? The amount of labor into that headlight bezel could be as much as 8-10 hours just doing prep, then you have the cost of the new coating, the wait for it to get back from the platers, etc. Say $50/hour for labor, you're looking at $400 or so in labor, just doing prep, then what, maybe $100 for the plating? The part now is in the neighborhood of $500-550. If it's a collision shop, you're looking at someone who's not really prepared to do the restoration, so you have to allow them time to take care of those, not a short term job.

BUT... you do also have too many of the guys who take your money, sit your car back and let it wait until you get disgusted and just want your car back. WAY too many crooks out there for sure.

For me it was not the money. I would pay more to have it done right. 25 years later I am still looking at the bad paint. The cost does not matter now, only the result. Shelly Auto Body. Danielsville, Pa. Liar and thief.

I agree 100 percent this job cost me 5500 in labor and 2300 in materials. I'm done bitchin time to get to work and put it back together...
