Will Crager s/s wheels hold up?

DVW:
Ronnie Sox ALWAYS used Keystone wheels. You can even see them in the pic.
Landy was the Cragar guy.
Just sayin...LOL

i have never been a fan of the ss wheels.
pros:
the looks, lots of people like em.
cons:
unilug centered with a washer.
chrome over aluminum center.will flake and peel if you drive the car on a regular basis.prob be a couple years, but it will happen.
heavy wheel.not a big deal for a street car,but it cuts down on performance for braking(rotational mass)
as stated earlyer, some sactioning bodys dont allow them.

From personal experience my buddy had 67 GTX with a 440 4spd speed dana60 car back in 1980 with Unilug crager's on it he was doing burnouts in the road with the car both tires had the lugs pulled through the rims and the car fell flat on the rear end.DONT BUY UNILUGS. After one year they started the pit

I believe that's what I said

[QUOTE}The Keystone Classic is the same style construction. You'll Notice that Ronnie Sox used them (w/4speed) on most of his S/S cars. They are heavy. But as I always say,you got to look good. The reason I included Sox's car is both style wheels are made the same, 2 piece, aluminum center, steel outer.

I ran the Keystone Classic wheels on my race cars in the 70s and 80s because they sponsored me and they were free. I liked the look and back then they weren't unilug. I suspect Landy and others ran them for monetary reasons as well. They endured hundreds of 7,000RPM clutch dumps and didn't come apart. The cars were always garaged, however.

I only raced cragar ss wheels in the 70's and 80's. Fastest was a 10.38 with them for years in a 65 chevelle ss.
Previous to the chevelle was a duster going 11.95 and a 440-6 70 cuda going 12.10 all using cragars ss with no issues. You will have no problem but they are heavier than the wheels out there now.

I bought this car used for $1200.00 and the cragars came on the car. Mine were NOT UNILUG either.

a non unilug cragar ss is either very old or a knockoff.i worked for super shops in the 80's and sold those wheels.they were unilug by then and have been since.knock offs are very abundant due to the popularity of the ss's and many will even recieve the ss caps for the center.most knockoffs came with just a chrome cap.dont know much about the older ss's,or how strong they are.would be interesting to look at the back side of one of the originals(used on the 60's and 70's drag cars)and compare it to the more modern design.i wounder if there is any differences besides converting to unilug design.

I "wounder" if your mistaken about that. The Crager site- http://www.cragarwheel.com/products16-6/CragarSeries61CChromeSSSuperSportDirectDrill - shows they have this direct drilled wheel which if you look at the "download specs" shows a specific bolt pattern like 5x4.5, 5x4.75, etc. That doesn't sound like uni-lug to me. I also looked at the Summit site- http://www.summitracing.com/parts/crr-61c573440/media/images- and if you enlarge the image, that sure looks like a perfectly round hole to me. You can also click on the 360 view and see the back like you wanted to and you'll see a perfectly round hole. I also called Summit and they said that Crager does make a non uni-lug wheel again now also that bolts directly to specific vehicles without uni-lug. So unless they are selling knock-offs and calling them Cragers I think you may be mistaken. If I am missing something here someone clarify this for me plz?

30+ year old S/S's[5X4.5] and slicks, on this 2 ton, 10-second barge. Look at the tires, and the wheels worked fine.

that would mean that they changed the design to a non unilug setup fairly recently.maybe they even noticed the wheels disadvantage.

Daytona Kid: After seeing that last picture do you still have questions?...lol

The Summit link is for a 5 x 4.75 bolt pattern. Great if you are buying wheels for a Ford...

uni-lug, (in any brand) are great for a stock 307 cheby, for you; avoid them like the plague.

Were these uni-lug or 5 x 4.5? Not that I will be getting rid of my uni-lugs...I am not putting out near the HP. Just curious.
