While wallowing around under the car installing subframes, I noticed the tight clearance between the floorboard tunnel and the transmission on my 64 pushbutton 727 Polara. I'm installing a high performance, later model 727 with floor shift. It appears I will need to cut a window on the driver's side tunnel and weld in a piece in that will mount a floor shift and provide the clearance for the linkage.

Is this correct??

What shifter (stock, aftermarket)?

A stock shifter would only need hole for linkage, don't know about aftermarket shifter.

A stock shifter for 64' used cables. Later models used the linkage.

Shorthorse is correct. I did this swap years ago. You need the trans mount from Schumacher. I think i read somewhere that the trans mount is the same as an A body, but i can't swear to it. You will have to change the drive shaft too. I mounted my shifter under the stock console. Since the shifter cable goes towards the front of the car, if you have headers, you will absolutely need a heat sleeve on the cable.

Consider a rear cable entry shifter like the PPP or the B&M Street Bandit. They cost more but it removes the possibility of the burnt cable shields from the front entry type shifters. By the time I spent all that money on different length cables and heat shields I probably spent just as much.

Yeah, I noticed the headers were right next to the shift linkage location. Figured there would be heat issues. Probably use some header wrap at that location.

Thanks for the input gents. Saved me from learning the hard way.

I use a 1970 auto 727 trans in my 63 Sport Fury and yes I had to use the trans mount from Schumacher or Imperial Services. For the shifter I use the B&M Pro Stick and it just bolted right to the floor with no problems. I also have 2" TTI headers and its been like this with the B&M Pro Stick since 2006 with no problems. I used a thermal sleeve on the last cable I replaced on the front exit shifter I had. They claimed max temp of 2000 degree F and 90% reflective rate. I still routed the cable away from the headers as best I could. That was probably 5 or 6 years ago and it's still OK.
