will i need new springs with this cam?

Nice! So he would have to put the new cam in first (better degree it in too), then do the springs once the front of the engine is put back together. If he goes with a monster cam. Sounds like Jaysam has more than enough info, better get to work and post pics and a vid! Cant wait.

I did a full rebuild on my 318, but i put a Comp Cam with a .440 lift part number 20-210-2, in my 318 along with edlebrock preformer intake and 600 cfm eldelbrock carb. Extremely happy with how it turned out, only thing i might change is the edlebrock carb for a 570 holley street avenger.

Just curious, what would make you want to switch from a 600cfm edelbrock to a 570 holley street avenger? Is the Holley more user friendly?

I like the street avenger because of the adjustable vacuum secondary. It's either the 570 cfm or 670 cfm and i think the 670 would be a bit too big. But i haven't decided yet. Still fine tuning the engine.

So rebootej, did you keep everything stock as far as lifters, push rods , valve springs, and rockers? Was it just the cam, intake, and carb you changed? Did you raise your compression or have any head work done?

Really? With the LSx platform you need hardened pushrods due to the increased spring pressures and the cam basecircle usually changes the pushrod length

:eusa_think:

you building an LS motor to put in your mopar? Just cause the chebby guys have to upgrade EVERYTHING when they upgrade doesn't mean everyone else has to, yer buildin a mopar son!

Correct, its all new parts, but stock. Took the whole engine into the machine shop, replaced springs and valves, might have shaved a little to true it up but no i didn't raise combustion or any thing, wanted a basic rebuild with a bit more power.

I'm a firm believer in a good solid valve train (as in over kill). Stock is stock, but if you put a heavier spring you should use the thicker, stronger push rods and a good steel or iron rocker arm. Some of the aluminum roller ones are probably good too as long as they don't flex. Strange things happen at high RPM when springs are involved.

Sorry, I've been sick- it's the 6900, and it's even cheaper now than when I bought mine---$52 !!

I've read that the summit brand lifters can lose the oil easy, and clatter when cold.

Think I'll get the others they show for $1 more each.

Technically, the 6901 could use the factory sprigs as well, as it's actually lower max lift.

I like the 6900's dual profle for effceincy, vs the 6901 raw air/fuel movement.
Looks like the 6901 might be better if you have headers or larger exhaust valves.

Late to the game here....

On upgrading the stock 318, I have a fab cam from Crane Cams. It is a split duration cam at a advertised 272/284-.454/.480-112. It doesn't require a converter change a d works with 3.21/3.23 gears and stock tires very well. A factory high stall is a nice converter if your so equipped with it I say great but do not bother switching for it.

One thing about the Crane Cam I like is the mello idle.
The other thing I like is there springs just swap over unlike others that require machining of the spring seat. Double check your comp springs if they are a direct fit or require machine work.

I also have Equiped 318's with the Performer and the Edelbrock LD4B intakes. The ld4b is a square bore intake, so no TQ's. use a 600/650 max carb. IMO, use the Carter AVS style carb or a vacuum secondary Holley, your choice.

Headers are a nice plus.

There seems to be some debate on whether or not the summit cams are the old crane fireball grinds.

I've been reading up on the fireballs and so far I don't think so.

Are they what used to be called an "RV" grind- maybe.

I'm OK with a broader, TQ curve with more max TQ, and a moderate HP gain, with "all in" by 4500-5000.

Especailly with zero to minimal hit to MPG, in fact some claims are MPG gain.

I just really don't want to take the heads off and/or deal with all that.
I have some "air holds" and spring compressors, but just don't want to deal with it right now.

Crane did make the Summit cams at one time, but not anymore. I am not sure who does, but it's not Crane. Rest assured if it was, the prices would be twice as high now, since S&S Cycles has bought Crane. Have you seen their prices now? It's ridiculous.

I did notice that 80% of their product is now harley specific.

Look on Ebay. I caint remember how they have them listed. I think if you type in "Crane Chrysler" you'll see all the listings. The prices are literally twice what they used to be from Crane before the buyout. The main Ebay seller is Titan Engines that sells them. In fact, I don't think you can even get anything directly through S&S/Crane anymore. And get this. If you look on Summit's site, their prices do NOT reflect the price jump.....so that can mean only one thing. That Summit is no longer going to carry Crane and they are selling out their old stock. Sounds like a good conspiracy theory anyway. lol
