windshield bloody hell

I hope it gets better soon for you 99, how many mirrors did you break! You've had more then your share of bad luck with this ride.. I admire your will in this, it isint going to break you down and you'll see it to its finish. I wish you better luck ahead. This will be a adventure that i hope you can look back on someday and remember it with some sort of a smile and a "i still made it happen" attitude.

Sure sounds like you pissed off the car Gods. Sometimes it's better to just walk away for a couple of days.

Went to Seattle for a couple days... played some hockey with an old friend, drank a few NW micro-brews and relaxed/recharged.

Picked up my bucket seats for the car and they are very nice so that is good. Not going to let this stop me at all. I might just have to become a windshield installer. I'm not going to pay someone to be incompetant... I can be that on my own... HAHAHJAHA

thx for the support guys

Damn the torpedos and full speed ahead !

OK.. we're gonna try this again.
This time I'm putting it in with help from the person who got me the glass.

145+145 so far.. the tweakers never charged me or called me back or anything.. ??
Maybe I hurt his feeling when I told him I could have broken it myself ?? Sucks to be you if you cant do your job right.

The dealer who is trying to charge me 100 for labor and 15 for material for 15 minutes of work... Called them and the manager said to speak to the receptionist as she is the one who billed it out... Isnt the manager in charge? They cut the seal and pushed the windshield out and left it here and want $15 for material? Needless to say I'm not paying 115 to them either. Lots of unqualified people working for shops is what I see... I can do a better job with 0 training than most of them with all their experience... freaking sad to say...... I cant trust anyone with my cars.

I paid 50 dollars to have the front windshield removed... The guy that came out was super careful with all the trim pieces that he removed. But he did specify to me that he had done plenty of old cars

The saga continues......

They tried to get it in but the darn corners are the issue. The just dont seem right so they ordered a gasket from their supplier for me for cost and we compare them.
They thought this was the kind that you put the chrome in at the same time and thats why they doidnt want to touch it, hasnt done them before but this is the zipper type ? so they are working on it for me.... gasket just doesnt seem correct in the corners.. ,my fault of course, I got it from epray

I went back to see what kind of special car your putting this glass in on and found out it is a 70 b body. There is someone out there that can do this. Got my front and back glass from pilkington and my gasket from AMD. Maybe you should try them ( AMD ) for youer gasket.

May 4th... still not in.. the last people havent called back in 3 weeks. Windshield is sitting here, they havent billed me for it yet either.....

Car is for sale !!
I cant take this any longer. All I want is my winshield installed and 2 broken ones and 2 months later nothing but heartache.. first 8000 takes it. Its so close to being a solid daily driver but I think I might have reached my limit...the windshield might have won this battle.. I'm at a loss for what to do next

It is easy for me to say hang in there but HANG IN THERE. Go to some car shows and maybe you will get someone to install this thing for you. I was on pins and needles when they put mine in but they got it right the first time. Someone can do this for you but it will take time. Good luck.

This just scares me, I bought my windshield last year for $185 then found out that it was impossible to find a gasket at the time... So it's been sitting in the shed waiting for me to finally tackle it.. Now after hearing of all these windshields breaking idk if I want to deal with it...

Don't do it!

Hey man....really sucks to see all your troubles. I tell you what, all of us guys that restore these cars as well as the guys that just run and maintain them get into a rut with our cars here and there. Don't let it get to you and sure in the hell don't let it take the passion out of your dream. The window guys...well, it's amazing how quick people react when they gotta stare at you eye to eye until it's fixed. Put your foot down and be persistant. Make them sit and wonder when's the next time you'll call or show up, because you're on them all of the time. I would.

Think about this........all the work you put into the car, all you learned and all the hurddles you took to get there. Impressive! Now think about how close you are and what she's gonna sound and feel like when you turn that key in the ignition. There's a lotta lotta folks that would love to experience that but never will. You have it at your fingertips my friend, it's that close. Do you want to be that guy that everybody knows, with the hung head talking about how I used to have this car and boy....sure wish I wouldn't have sold it. Hell no!

I've been driving these mopars everyday since I could drive and i'll tell you what the best thing about them is. It's not the glamour, bragging about numbers or parading around some stupid high dollar showboat, it's about all the friends you make along the way and the american legacy of the automobile. When you drive down the street's and kids stop their bikes to wave, thinking "i'm gonna have one of those someday" or the old guy at the gas station comes over to reminisce about his old classic and the good old days, that's when you realize that it's not just a piece of tin sitting on four chunks of rubber, it's a piece of you, history and what owning these cars is all about.

Dude.......Chest out, Chin up and go put that Plymouth on the road! It's what you wanted to do from square one and don't let anything stop you. Someone/something kicks you in the dirt, get right back up and do it again.
I seriously hope you reconsider...You're not the guy cashing in his IRA's or are using equity to buy a turn key car to brag about. You're the guy that bought a rusted out mopar, had a vision of what the car could be, busted your knuckles, did the work and learned along the way. That's what these cars, this hobby needs and if you continue to do it, by all means somehow or another you'll pass it along down the road.

Well Put Will!!!

x2!!

when it comes down to it, that's all that matters...

99, please don't give her up...she'll make you happy!!!

she just needs to get sorted out...

it will all be worth it!!!:3gears:

Props' got it right - don't sell just because of a windshield problem, you will regret it later. I would be visiting them every other day until they get the glass installed for you. A guy would think they would want to keep their customers happy.

Well said prop. Look at the problems I am having with my seats ( LEGENDARY IS FIXING THERE SCREW UP ). Move onto something else till you get this solved. Prop is right. When I turned the key after 12 years on the GTX my eyes lit up and the grin was from ear to ear ( I almost sold it but my wife talked me out of it saying I would regret it ). It kicked me into high gear after that first start-up. IT WILL ALL WORK OUT. WERE ALL FRIENDS HERE AND YOU COULD NOT GIVE ME YOUR CAR BECAUSE WE ALL WANT YOU TO KEEP IT.

Once again Prop pulls me from the fire. I was ready to dump it. I've thought about all the blood sweat and tears that have brought it to this point( thanks to prop). I thought if I could just get a certain amount for it I would be doing myself a favor and maybe I was wrong to even try to attempt this in the first place. I wont give it away and no one will pay what I want so no matter what it's not going anywhere. I left a vmail for the windshield people and asked them to come try the new gasket. Pleaded with them a little so we'll see what happens. I did not get a return call yet and they havent charged me yet for the windshield so I dont know whats up with them. My guess is they would rather do easy jobs and make money rather than struggle with this for a half a day. If it was as simple as a butyl strip I could do it myself, done a few with the 3M kit back in the day.
SO the car isnt going anywhere. I think taking a break from it is the best thing for now until i can get my batteries recharged and build up some steam.... I have been welding on the floor a little here and there improving my skills a little. Just need to grind down some of the welds to make them more presentable but I've learned how to fill a hole which is not easy... kept making it bigger until I learned how to puddle it up better.

The 79 z28 needs to get done and sold and the money from that goes into the SS/gtx to finish it and do it right. Cant store the SS/GTX outside until it gets the windshield in it so I'm in a catch 22 type of scenerio. The z28 is in actual better shape, only needs two tiny patches and some floor patches and now that I can weld it will be easy and simple to finish it. If I can get it under the tent.

I was thinking that if I could sell it for what I want then I could pay some bills and then start over on another one BUT.. I looked at all I have done on this car.. the complete under carriage is new from suspension to brakes to fuel lines etc.... I've been working on this car with the long haul in mind and it really is, except for cosmetics, one of the most solid cars on the road. It would take me a long time and money to get any car to its shape mechanically. I wanted it to be mechanically sound and then look good.
I have done so much to this car and really kind of forgot what it takes to get it to this point. From the first test ride to where I am now has been a hell of a journey and it's not over yet. Just taking a rest from it for now.
Thank you guys I'll keep plugging away at it

Outstanding!

Great to hear!!!!! Good choice!!! Nothing wrong with letting the dust settle and allowing your nerves get on track 99ss. We alllllllll do that with these cars.

That great skit NorthernDave posted on this thread with the "how to" on a windshield install would be a great step by step to follow if you wanted to tackle it yourself.

Again...great to hear. All the great gent's on this site as well as the guys that have contibuted to this thread along with myself are here to help man... :icon_thumright:

Have you tried soliciting at a local car show? Walk around and talk to the mopar crowd with restored cars and see who put in their windshield. (you know they had to take it out). Somebody is bound to turn you on to somebody who knows what they are doing.

Thats a good idea. I know there is a collector like 30 miles form me who I think does his own work but getting the car to him or anyone without the windshield in it is the issue....
Can I can legally drive without it? Just use some glasses or goggles and drive it ? If so I'll drive it to him as is. Starts and runs fine without the dash..LOL I can bolt a seat in and install the seatbealts easy enough

It would be illegal here to drive without a windshield if you got caught.

FWIW I took a car for a spin without a windshield in it once. It was amazing how much air gets pushed up over the hood and down your throat.
