Windshield removal ?

Need to get the windshield out of my 64 polara. Anyone know the best way to get it out? Was going to cut it out with wire, but wanted to make sure there wasn't something different, or that I needed to save before I cut it out. Or of it was possible to save to old windshield seal?
 
I've put two in my 64 Ply over the years and have yet to change the gasket. The old works out pretty easy with a little lube.
 
I've had 3 gasketed windshields replaced by professionals and they always trash the gasket. Besides, why take a chance on an old gasket leaking to just turn around and buy one and do it all over again?
 
The old gasket can be saved very easily. I have always reused them.

Are the new gaskets sealing good and fitting correctly these days? I remember when they came out they were junk.

I ordered a new one just in case I needed it on the last window install this spring and when we held it up to the opening after the old window was out it didn't line up well at all so used the old one again and no leaks.

How do you remove everything? I need to pull mine as well and wondered how I'd get the gasket out and access to get the trim off
 
Well the trim comes off first, it’s tricky if you never done it. The tool goes between the gasket and the trim.

Watch this video from start to 3:10 for trim removal part. Then watch from 10:30 to 14:10 for glass removal. They have a C-body so some is different than B body.



The gasket has a lock strip, they don’t unlock it in the video. I don’t know if that car has a lock strip. B-Bodies usually have a lock strip. You can see a parting line that runs parallel to the edge and has angled seams on the corners. You unlock it and fold the outer part back. You gently pry in the groove and it sill open up. The part of the seal near the body rolls back towards the body, then the part on the glass rolls back towards the body. Then you can start pushing the glass out. A helper may need to hold the lock strip out of the way.

Here are 2 photos of the lock strip on a 1967 B-body.

Ask more questions if any doubts.

Do you have a factory service manual for your car? They do have this in the body section 23.

Breaking that windshield is not worth 5 gaskets, cut it out, save the grief. 55 year old rubber is no good
 
Is the windshield still good? Do you want to save. The glass?

Just have to weigh it out for each situation.

Just strikes me as wasteful when people say to cut the rubber, it’s not that hard to save both parts.

Could depend on regional area and weather if the seals last or are junk. I’ve gotten dozens of good seals from Seattle/Portland area.

Agree a little, last two where bummers. On my 66 sometime in its life it had that black sealer glue (what is used in the new cars) used when glass installed. I couldn’t get the glass out no mater what I did, trying to save rubber. Ended up cutting and still broke glass, it was stuck on inside edge too.
Each case is different, think it out, you get one chance!

I understand this, but it seems odd when compared to the rear window, at least on a 62.
I want to pull my 62 windshield so I'll give it a closer look now that I know how the seal works.
The rear seal on mine has a center rubber section that pulls out, in one piece, then it was easy to fold the gasket down, pull the glass, then pull the seal.
It was easy peasy, hope the front is too.
