will a shift kit raise the wot shift point to a higher rpm ?
 
No, not typically. You have some control over the shift point adjusting the throttle pressure linakage.
 
You can raise WOT shift point with lighter weights in governor assembly. A&A Transmissions near Indy sell these.

The lighter inner weight will increase both WOT shift points equally. If you get one shift point where you like it, but not the other, you’ll need to mess with the shift valve springs too.
 
the reason I asked was because I put a B&M shift kit RV street not race in my 1967 Newport 383 2 barrel that shifted at 4400-4500 and with the kit it went to 5000-5100 rpms. I want to do it on another car that shifts at 4600 rpms now. I don't get it a lot of tranny guys say it won't help but what happen in my 67 Newport to raise the wot ? don't want to do all that and not change the rpm shift

Line pressure was probably increased with adjustment screw on valve body.

it was increased that must be why.
Back off the throttle pressure some. It may be the easiest thing to try.
 
That heavier spring in the throttle valve circuit will also affect WOT shift points, along with grinding the valve.

not sure i have to look that up what the throttle valve is.
 
Changing the line pressure affects the whole spectrum.
The solution is to drill the governor weight on the mainshaft.
There's a chart somewhere, I have to find mine.
A measured depth per 100 rpm increase. Mine was raised to 5600.

The original transmission in my Charger has always shifted out of first at 3500 rpm at full throttle, but out of second at 4500 rpm. Not sure what the cause was, but I am swapping it out when I install the new engine anyway.

Stiffer 2-3 shift valve springs. Then lighter governor inner weight.

Yes. On my Cope auto shift valve body, the directions explicitly state "use stock governor only". I didn't read that the first time so I was dealing with a non upshift issue. Put the stock governor back in and no more issues. Shifts higher but not high enough.

The shift valve springs are what you want to swap out if you want higher shift points.

I’m sure you can change the governor on the Cope VB. Getting the right up shifts can be trial and error.
 
I found a thread that states max wedge governor will raise the shift point to 5800
Copying the max spec by drilling the upshift governer on... the mainshaft... is what raises shift point.
Playing with springs and valve body changes shift quality, part throttle kickdown, etc. More importantly, changing line pressure can make the trans hold a gear longer, longer than 30mph into second, which can be annoying. Especially with 2.94.
I spec'd 5600 for mine and once proven, took the tach off the column.
4dr ultimate sleeper, leave in drive, and if they are ahead, just wait for the shift.
With 6 speakers and 2 amps I couldn't hear the car run anyway.
They refer to it being thinner and deeper. So that is not a spool valve in the valve body.

I had the max wedge governor installed and it would not upshift at wot. No adjustment on the throttle valve worked. I tried. The directions state, "you must use the stock governor."
 
I have a Cope auto shift VB. Changing governor weights works on mine.

Maybe between increased pressure and your lighter governor weight it wouldn’t shift at a reasonable rpm for you.
