Thanks Roger! Got a bunch of good parts for the $ 700 bucks I paid for the truck. I intend to pull the heads and disassemble them, and then when I pull the block out I just have to lay it down in the truck bed and pull the bottom end and off it goes to be cleaned up.

Nice days work, looking like I’ll have a chance to get out to the shop Friday night finally

A mocked up look at the forthcoming power plant, just to get an idea, and motivation.....

I pulled the cylinder heads and found a badly cupped lifter and valve that is sludged up black, both together in same cylinder. This accounts for the tickity tick when the engine was running.

I'd get rid of that fire waiting to happen air cleaner...

looking good Ghost

rebuild or RR time

wiped out the camshaft/lifters
no biggie :BangHead:
you wanted a better camshaft anyway

make sure to "completely disassemble the whole engine"
every nut & bolt & do the oil pump too,
make sure to "clean thoroughly/completely"
pistons & rings too, soap & water & hi-pressure air
getting all that crap out of all the oil passages & anywhere
pull all the oil passage plugs "make sure you get them all",
replace them after, clean out the rocker shafts really good too
"it's cheap insurance"
Heed the warnings; :cursin:
It's all them little fine grindings go thru every oil passage
& every part of the engine {been there, done that}
OR
if you don't, it will wipe out the new cam & bearings,
not to say all the rest of the **** it could or will destroy :blah:...

good luck keep US posted

Yeah, that IS one of the things I recall about engine work, clean it, then clean it three more times. It's the same with choppers, any little thing will cause them to fall out of the sky... I'm going to dip it into a 55 gallon drum and hook it up for electrolysis.. get the gun cleaning kit out and clean passages and all. I have nothing but time so I can afford to be thorough. I gotta see my pal Rick and see if he has a socket big enough to pull the crank bolt so I can get the balancer, pulley and timing gear off..Most likely pull the block out on Tuesday...

Ok, it's out and the detective work has been done mostly. All tore apart down to the crank, rods and plugs still in. The engine has been worked over in the past and sports -.10 main and rod bearings, +.30 cylinders bored, TRW L2266 plugs flat tops, Crane HMV Max Velocity cam/lifters, and the aforementioned stuck lifter which wiped the cam. There has been a bunch of work done on the crank to balance it. One NEW piston and rod.
Coming up I will measure bores, journals, depth in the hole, deck height etc...
The double set timing chain from the 74 motor will be swapped over to the 73.
Have a Comp cam # CL21-306-4 224/270 1800-5500rpm stock TQ .470 lift, coming for it, the M1 intake, 911-16 springs.
Will port the heads and intake gasket match, exhaust gasket match, get them checked for flatness along with checking the block. Need to take apart the 750 carb and clean it up and rebuild it. Need a oil pick up tube. Bought 3" TTI exhaust back half tubes, and have rebuilt disc brake calipers with pads on the way.

Scrapped the plan for the 73 440. Will keep it in reserve. Moving on....1974 MH block. Forged crank, thicker heavy duty con rods, bone stock, low miles, extra material along the sides of the block. Looks good on the crank journals, nice and smooth. Cylinders are also all good. Punch this one out to .30-.40 and slide in the Comp cam, thin up the gasket some, mill the deck some, should be a power house.

Sold the cab and the wheels and tires from the truck so mo' money for parts...Sold my small block 727.

Ordered porting kit from Eastwood, Dremel kit, Holley carb rebuild kit. Got gas shocks for the rear. Block and heads go out next week to Vermont Engine. Block gets .030 bore, decks milled flat, hot tanked, cleaned out. Heads get a broken stud removed, three angle valve job, surfaces milled flat, cleaned out, hot tanked. Once I get them back I will gasket match the heads, and mild porting job, install new springs, locks, retainers, cleaned up valves, new seals, paint the block, replace cam bearings, install the oil pump, mains and rods, double timing chain, install LY rods and Sealed Power flat top pistons w/ new rings, steel head gasket, forged crank, Comp cam and lifters, new valley pan, and M1 intake with rebuilt and cleaned up Holley 750 double pumper. Block hugger headers( if they fit in there) among other things..

I didn't go crazy with the porting on mine but after having them tested they were on par with the Stealths. After larger valves were added I opened the seats up, blended the bowls really well, gasket matched leaving the exhaust slightly under and cleaned up the casting.... still plenty of hours.
