There is already a similar thread on the Year of Manufacturer California black plates. Wanted to heighten awareness for anyone considering this. DMV has confirmed to me by phone (CJ - I have a pretty good inside number for her in Sacramento of you want it), that if any Law Enforcement Officer in the USA runs the plate YGJ-516 it will come up expired. You must explain to the Officer during the traffic stop that they need to run it as a YOM, and check the VIN.

When questioned, she just kept repeating. So when driving, you may as well have a flag that says "pull me over - expired plate. She recommended that I call San Jose PD to have their Officers informed of this. Yeah right. Moral: When locating a clean set of black plates for your ride if it qualifies, the record must indicate " no record found. Not signed off at a wrecking yard or whatever. Otherwise your information cannot be assigned to the plate.

Here in the Badger state we can run year correct plates on our collector cars if we are going to or from a show (Example : on my 63 Dodge I can use 63 plates) however to avoid being pulled over I only run the year correct plate on the front. On the back I run my Collector plate which is the plate I was issued when I registered my 63. I prefer to avoid any hassles with the boys in blue. This is what is going on in Wisconsin.

I went to AAA to bypass DMV and when the lady tried to look up the plates boom expired. She had to run the vin # to register the charger. So there are issues.

He's talking about a "Year of Manufacture" plate, Badger. It's an original, period license tag that California allows him to have the car registered under.

What seems to be the problem is that the DMV/police computer systems don't have these tags listed in the same database as everything else. With these fancy new license plate scanners, this could become a highly repetitive problem if officers are not made aware of the secondary database.

DMV insisted that the existing modern plates be surrendered at the time of the YOM issue. I only have the YOM's.

In Indiana, you take your YOM plate to the bmv, buy an historic plate, the bmv issues an affidavit, you carry the affidavit and the historic plate in the car, then you can use your YOM plate.

I have Derwud, Derwud3, Derwud4, DWS III (Dad, Daughter and I share the same Initials) and MnkyPlw (Monkey Pillow for my 2 girls). I need a car for Derwud2...

Nice tip. Dennis.
Personally, I usually just go all "Kowalski" when the fuzz pulls in behind me. No meth, no nekkid biker chicks and no bulldozers. They can't catch what they can't see.

Kidding of course.

Wow, it sounds like running cool plates is tough stuff in USA....luckily we have personalised Plates here - for a one-off purchase price.
Get something that makes a statement on the car.....

I have owned this plate since 1988, and it ain't going anywhere. :D

Does the oil leak out of the engine with the car parked like that ?

Connecticut does it similar to this also. You bring the plate you want to use in and they check it to make sure it is year appropriate, and that the number is not currently in use.

Looking to get the black/yellow plates as soon as I trust my GTX to get to the DMV and back again. I think I have the major gremlins solved for now the car is running well. Don't need any problems with the cops over these plates. Now I'm debating it I should just go with the standard issue plates.

I don't want to turn in my Minnesota collector plates if that's required. Not sure I understand the whole issue with this stuff. CA is such a pain in the *** state. Nothing goes smoothly it seems.....

We have the option for these in Florida, but there hasn't been any discussion that I know of regarding the YOM system not being tied in with the standard database. Have been wary about using a YOM tag here in Florida ever since.

Plus, our old tags are not reflective, and thus probably not usable with our SunPass highway tolling system.

When we took delivery of our GTX from Texas, the previous owner took the plates off before shipping. We took it to the CA DMV and did a straight registration and got personal plates at that time. We just received our "Legacy" plates with the same personalized message as before. The first CA plates went back to the DMV.

With your Minnesota plates, I would just tell them they were lost in shipment and register the car here. They really don't care if you keep the old plates so long as they don't get used..

I can't tell you how many times I have changed plates and the DMV folks asked if we lost the front plate, so we could keep one out of the set...

Another tact is to go to the Auto Club and do your whole process there thereby avoiding the DMV altogether!
