Hey guys I'm new here, so I'm looking for some advice or possible reassurance. I have a fresh built 440, I installed a Lunati Voodoo can and lifters that came with it, the lifters are hydraulic, I installed roller rockers, on cold start up they clatter for a brief moment till oil pressure builds. So my question being is it normal for them to bleed off over night, or could it be because of the spring pressure causing them to bleed off? any input or advice would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Maybe your filter is bleeding back? Are you running some kind of crazy spring pressures? Could be just one lifter thats bleeding off. My buddy on a Chevrolet had a lot of issues with Lunati hydraulic roller lifters. They did finally get better. Lunati's answer was to run them.

No I'm not running any crazy heavy springs, and just running flat tapet hydraulic lifters with roller rockers only, I guess I will just have to run it more, I only got about 30 miles on the build, thanks for the info

What did you set your preload to?

Pre-load has nothing to do with lifter tick, provided the prod seat in the lifter has some clearance from the circlip.

2 thou.. I don't think so..
I would agree it's likely 20,,, HOWEVER, the comp pro magnum hydraulics do call for a .002~.004 hot preload. I have some in my street 383 and set them as such. And never did hear a peep out of them

How does that help?

Reportedly, the tick is only on start up.
More preload would take less time for the lifter to pump back up after the motor has sat and the lifters have bled down.

If the valvetrain has adjustment, it’s an easy and free thing to try.

Okay. So it doesn’t fix anything, but might make the clatter stop earlier. I guess that this also presumes that the lifters that clatter have totally bled down and are bottomed out.

I haven't the time to actually run it down the road other than a few miles, I was just wondering if anyone has had this issue with the lunati brand or if I'm just overthinking things and just need to give it a good long run,

I don’t think I ever set a hydraulic lifter pre-load at anything larger than 0.005, and usually at 0.002-0.003”. But that was with quality lifter from +30 years ago.

Pull the covers, find the "soft" one, pull the lifter and take it apart. Clean it all out, put it back together and then put it in a spray can lid full of oil. Use a drill press or arbour to cycle the lifter up and down until it pumps solid, put it back in.

Which side is the 'Tick' on?. Remember the drivers side gets oil first then the passengers side.
