Got the 572 back, Now lets find some power

Sounds like it’s time for some shakedown passes at the track.

    383 low oil pressure

I ran into that situation on a 350 SBC ages ago. 10/10 crank, std bearings. Ran perfect, no noise at all. Normal-ish oil pressure on cold start, very very low pressure when warm.

    383 low oil pressure

Well, so you’re going to have to dig in a bit deeper. “What I would do”……. Before pulling the engine, is pull the pan and carefully inspect the pickup tube for blockage or cracks(leaks). If that all looks good, I’d probably pull the engine. If one of the galley plugs up front were missing, I...

    Camshaft ID

Sure looks like a Comp to me. Check the lobe lift. The 323-5 lobe has .460 lift. I think you’ll find that’s what it is.

    Motor running hot.

As mentioned, fan should not be more than 1/2 way into the shroud opening. Also, the wp pulley should not be larger in diameter than the crank pulley. If you’re having heating issues, having the wp pulley smaller than the crank pulley is what you want. What is the timing at the typical part...

On the chassis dyno, “Engine power” is estimated from the wheel dyno numbers. I have seen enough wheel dyno numbers that don’t really make any sense that I don’t have much faith in them as being “accurate”. Imo, the best use of the chassis dyno is dialing in the timing and a/f ratios…….get it...

    lunati voodoo camcard

The conversion from nM to ft/lb is .7376 320nM @6000 = 236ft/lb 236ftlb @6000 = 270hp 300hp @6500 = 242ft/lb, which is 328nM It really makes no sense that the torque curve would still be climbing after 6000rpm. I guess I’d need to see the sheets to offer any insight.

What do the things like air flow and fuel flow look like? BSFC numbers?

I’d be expecting 400hp+(Corrected STP) out of that combo……..at the crank, as measured on the engine dyno.

No worries. I’m just being nosy.

    63 Plymouth stock eliminator project

If those “advertised” duration(.020) specs are correct, that’s a bunch of seat timing for the .050 numbers. I suspect that 305 number actually happens at something other than .020”(probably more like .006”). Any idea what the V/P situation is? Have you done a cranking pressure test? If built...

Looks great! Glad you got to make a few hits. Do you know the cam specs? Did you happen to check to see what the flash stall speed was?

My new stock stroke 400 build

The dyno session was done with headers? The 400 will retain the manifolds in the car? If so, you’ll probably end up with leaner jetting with the 400 than you had on the dyno.

    1978 440 cylinder head

Not all 452’s use small plugs. In fact I’d say the majority of them don’t. I’ve only ever had a few of them in the shop since 1989. The few I’ve had here with the small plugs also had the steam holes in the deck surface. In terms of what else can be used in its place, if you’re looking at...

    Mancini's Purple Shaft cams

If you end up with a cam in that same size range, I’d def take the time to check the V/P clearance. Obviously there are plenty of variables between different engines(deck height, head milling, how deep the valve job is, what size the valves are, valve margin thickness, where the cam is...

    Mancini's Purple Shaft cams

That’s interesting you had no V/P clearance issues with the 2295’s and the 590 cam. Years ago I went thru a 446 that had 2295’s in it along with a 590. It was running ported 346’s with bigger valves. Most of the exhaust valves were bent from contact with the pistons. I don’t recall what the...

    Mancini's Purple Shaft cams

I can’t offer any insight about the Mancini cams, but what was the previous combo and performance you’re trying to replicate? Another consideration might be, what does anyone actually have on the shelf, or what are the lead times involved if they don’t have one on hand?

Kind of 'stock' 383 build questions?

If you haven’t yet watched the “weaky 383” series on Nicks Garage, you should. Watch the video, look at the results………and ask yourself what’s going to be different on your 383 that would bring the power from what they got up to 400+ hp………that still fits the parameters of what you’re looking...

Kind of 'stock' 383 build questions?

Imo, the OP should do some soul searching and figure out how much of a priority the “high performance” aspect of his street cruiser dream is. If it’s fairly high on the list……..then he should really give more thought to a stroker. In a milder type build, the one thing the extra cubes do very...
