I used to be nervous about driving the car out of town. I did not like parking the car out of my view either. One time, a buddy wanted us to drive both of our classics from Sacramento to Van Nuys for the Spring Fling. He is always short on cash and picked the "Good Nite" Inn off of 101 north of Malibu. The parking spaces are really narrow there! I first checked the site out on Google Earth and told him I would not park my car there. Door dings or scratches looked to be a certainty at that place.

I blame MSD...sort of.
Their instructions do list that the coil is to be mounted vertically and I had it horizontal...for several years before it failed.

I'd have to modify a bracket to mount one vertically. I think they look better horizontally anyway.

Weren't the stock ones oil filled when they came from the factory? Beside leakage, I don't see why it would matter which way the coils mounted. Maybe I'm missing something?

They claim the oil settles due to gravity...I thought it was gel filled. Maybe if they sealed them better it wouldn't be a problem.

The MSD lives an unsheltered life. Coil always has been mounted this way.

That coil looks nice and dry. Mine was seeping "oil" or whatever is inside the Blaster 2 units.

This is way too much info, but here it is. Looking at the Holley site, the Accel Super Stock canister style is epoxy-filled and is the only one Accel states can be mounted in any position. Likewise, MSD states their High Vibration Blaster (epoxy) can be mounted in any position. The Mallory Promaster and Accel Super Coil are oil-filled and have mounting brackets that place them upright. I assume that mounting some, maybe not all, oil-filled coils sideways or upside down allows the inner windings to not be covered in oil, thus allowing them to get hotter and possibly fail sooner. Dunno, just a thought. I'd say if possible, follow the manufacturers recommendations.

No one runs points anymore?? Man, can't get any simpler than that! So what if you have to tune it once a year. If you use good parts and know how to tune it, it'll last at least a year.....AND, they don't let you down for the most part. Axe me how I know.

Well, I’m trying to save stress on the body; that bending gets to you pretty quick! Plus when the wear block wears down your dwell/timing changes. Back when we were 18-20, we just re-adjusted! Now, I like to know it’s all just the same no matter the miles,lol.

Cranky I was once told in a AC-Delco class that if you could “tune” the microfarad rating on the condenser that the points would never wear at the contact point(course the wear block is another story).

Gotta lube the wear block. The way I tuned them was to set the points a bit wide and the plugs a bit close and let the tune 'drive in' and it did just that. An 'older guy' showed me that when I was a teen and been doing it ever since. Now I'm the older guy lol. My race car had the Mopar Performance electronic setup and it never failed and also had an MSD system on another race car but didn't keep it long enough to see if it would last. Also always heard the chrome box wasn't a very good one.....also heard about that condenser trick but never messed with it.
