1962 Header Help

Right on about heat and squeeze for clearance. I use the correct outter diameter deep well socket layed sideways at the angle you need. Easy to make a professional looking depression in the tube. My RS header on my 64 is easily that close to the inner fender. It has never burned the paint, but it is a drag car. Try this If you decide to paint the headers insread of coating them . After cleaning , blasting, use metal prep on them . Last set of old rusty headers done this way made it 5 years still looking decent. As far as coatings, nobody better than QC Coatings in Michigan. This set shown for my wife's sb Challenger, 14 years old and were looking ratty. Not after QC tuned them up.

Thanks Rick.
I was looking at the design of this starter to see if it could be clocked at a different position. Doesn't look like it can. I've always thought about the terminal position and I'm liking the location on this one but I guess you can't have your cake!

Go buy a cheap mopar mini starter off ebay for $59.00,that starter's barrel is too wide. Problem solved.

Kid... If you are considering dropping $700 0n headers TTI is right in there in price. I have never heard a complaint on their ease of installation and fit. I slid some big tube TTI's into my Hemi Coronet and was quite impressed. I will be ordering a set for my 65 soon. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks Thunder. It's just money that I would rather hold on to for other stuff. Just did a list on plumbing, mufflers and a lot of other items and the total will be up there. I bought the last transmission mount on the planet from Classic Industries (and it was the only one they had left) yesterday and had to pay $26 for shipping. Ouch! I had several promotional codes and not a one would work, but I couldn't pass on the only one that was out there right now. Everyone else are "out of stock".

I had a 1964 Polara 500, 383 car and I remember putting a used set of headers on it. They were off of a '68 Coronet. Fit right in there with the factory starter. Now you had to do a chicken dance with that side, header and starter but when they were bolted up, all was good. I don't remember the right side being that close to the shock tower like this one. Are the '64-'65s a tad bit wider in the engine compartment? It seems to me my '64 was a lot wider car than this '62.

I was thinking the same thing about the width of this starter. I have a Advance Auto right down the street. Might get one and try it out. If not, they will take it back.

How can you go wrong for this price I have this starter on my 65 Plymouth and 63 Plymouth and works great at 14.5 compression.
And you wont have to dent your tube

Can't beat that with a stick!

I bought that Jegs starter from a member on here for the right price and it's the higher gear ratio one. Thought I'd give it a try. After bolting it up, it appears to be as wide as the big ole factory one. I'll give one like you posted a try before useing the BFH and report back.

I'm going to Advance Auto for a set of motor mounts for my '05 Sebring. State Inspector told me last year to have them replaced and it's March already. Really looking forward to that job! I'll just pick up a Dakota starter while I'm there. They treat me pretty good...

Unfortunately you're going to pay about $100.00 for it there plus a core charge.

Boy do I hear you on the money thing! I did a spread sheet on all that I need for my project, and the vendors I intend to use.I came to a total for all the pieces...Holy ****! NONE of that number includes Shipping!! I went a step further to use reputable vendors as close to me as possible, to minimize that unknown cost. We will see how that goes! I will have to order all from each one time to minimize the pain! As far as 64 and 65's being any wider...I don't think so? Yeah, ya know what they say... everything seems to be a little bit different than I remember!! LOL We need to talk sometime.

I have the exact same starter and with Headman's #78030 headers you DO have to dimple them. Two tubes need to be clearanced to fit around that starter. Both the #3 an #5 pipes have to be dimpled in order for them not to touch. I massaged mine so I have a minimum 1/2" clearance which should be good.

Ill try to find them again if you want kid...I looked yesterday for a little bit but came up empty. I want to say they were on Racing Junk...

Ok, you talked me into it. Ordered one from your ebay link.
Here is the Doug's headers with minie starter lots of clearance nothing touches and no beating. Did have to remove the starter stud and use a bolt.

62-70 engine compartments are the same width. 62-65 K frame mounts position the engine further forward than 66-70. Front track width is the same. frame rails, tie rods, drag link, control arms are all the same dimension.

Thanks Doug for that info. It must be the tapered front nose on the '62, compared to the '64-'65 that gave me the impression. Also dropping in the RB 440 uses up a tad bit more of the engine compartment!
