1968 Coronet 500 Project

I had the bug to do something to the Coronet. I have always hated the felt table cloth trunk liner so I bought a more accurate rubber one from OER. Both of them are not quite right for a Coronet. I had to do a few custom cuts to make it fit based on the original that was in the car.

I was not going to let the Pertronix III beat me. The mechanical parts of the ignitor III are junk. The plastic and pot metal has poor tolerances and the pickup moves all over the place. The vacuum advance would use some of its throw to just rock the plate and not move it radially. They sent me a new plate for another reason and I decided I needed to make it better. I used a dremel to remove the melted plastic to remove the plastic so I could installed some 2-56 brass screws to allow me to tighten up the plate.

I then used a small drill for a pilot hole in each clip tab, installed, so I could tap the hole for the brass screws.

Next I tapped the holes.

I then installed the brass screws and adjusted them so the plate would slip but not rock or wobble and put some plastic compatible oil on the mating surfaces.

Now the vacuum advance movement is all translated into rotation. If the rain ever starts I will get it back together and see how she works!

Got it installed and the timing is now rock solid. Vacuum advance is about 16 degrees, much better.

Blown 318 would be cool!
Yup, old Detroit Diesel 2-strokes used a 6-71 blower in the 60’s-early 70’s. Same cubes, power stroke every 180* rather than every 360*. ( Jim ain’t gonna do it !)

Next major inner struggle ....... $2000 for new chrome everywhere or save it for the downpayment on the '69 Sport Satellite Convertible this fall.........

The good news is the Coronet took 1st place at the Mopar only show in Phoenix Saturday in the '68-'70 B Body Modified (non stock paint and EFI). Met a bunch of FBBO guys there for a great day. The drive home on I10 and the traffic cost me a nice rock chip in my hood lip and 2 more windshield chips. I really don't like being anywhere around that corridor of I10 anymore......

Nice. Congrats on the 1st Place. sorry to hear about the rock chips.

It is always a risk here in the land of rocks and sand. No guts no glory :) Since I painted it I know how to fix it. There are a few other touchups I wanted to do anyway so I guess it is time to order some SPI products tomorrow..

Bad luck about the chips. Traffic was heavy for sure. I'm glad I finally got to see the Coronet in person...sorry I didn't bring her an early birthday present! Lol

Got my Battery Topper to cover my Deka maintenance free battery with the correct green cap group 24. Way cool and really finished the engine compartment.

I also found a place in Phoenix that restores and sells parts to buy a new windshield and rear glass. They are delivering a few to Sierra Vista in the next few weeks and offered to drop them off on the way by at no charge! New glass with no shipping! While I am at it I am going to replace the vinyl top since the spray adhesive was a bad idea as you could not control how much went on well. There are a lot of bubbles where it is ungluing. No one has mentioned it but it bugs the crap out of me. Also I can try again at getting the front windshield not to leak.....

More than a Feeling on the way to the show last weekend.... For the rest of the country spring is coming!
