1. I believe the "original" was whale oil (not kidding).....d'ar she blows! And I think that ended in '72? I "think" it was called Type A & is yellowish.
2. Dextron is recommended & that has morphed into Dextron/Mercon (aka Dex/Merc) and I would consider that the correct fluid for your use. I'd say 99% chance this is what's in the transmission now.
3. "Type F" is the old Ford fluid & you can still buy it in many parts stores. I does have a higher "coefficient of friction" and is preferred for racing OR older transmissions that might slip a little bit. You can use it no problem.
4. I highly recommend that you DON'T MIX transmission fluids. Run 100% Dex/Merc or 100% Type F in my opinion.....and change the filter while you're at it...unless you're just topping it off.
Type F should not be used in any TF racing or not
you would be better off with motor oil
you like rebuilding transmissions
Type f is incompatible with the clutch facings
that said
type 4+ is a later formulation and much superior to DEX III , Mercon etc
you do not need the anti chatter additive for the lock up torque converter but the base stock and additive package is far superior to others- It's a cost effective solution and not expensive for a synthetic
you want the best get CITGO Quatrasyn
should last about forever even if snow plowing or running an overweight cab over camper, whatever
Type IV-V synthetic which is a better base stock than the Type III of Mopar 4+
