1970 Super Bee 383 Auto Stalling when hot

if it starves for fuel after running for a couple miles, wouldn't it "sputter"? ........ he said it doesn't sputter, it just cuts off
 
Not sure if this problem is being discussed in another thread. Bought a 1970 Super Bee 383 automatic. Took it out yesterday. drove 5 miles to gas station. Put premium in then drove another 4 miles (45 mph). The engine just shut off going up a hill. Had to coast to the side. The car started back up and I drove another 4 miles when the engine shut off again. Got stuck on a two lane. Started the engine and limped back home - 1 mile at a time. the car would start back up but only go about a mile. At one point I was able to coast off the road. Sat for 5 minutes then made it about 3 miles. Finally got it back in my garage. There was no hard idle or sputtering. It would run normal then shut off each time. Any ideas where to start looking?
Boiling fuel
 
Bad coil. It fails when it gets hot. The engine quits like you shut the key off. Fuel problems will usually sputter before it quits. I have had it happen on a couple of my cars.
 
Check the coil, simple resistance measurements. Then take a look at the fuel pump pushrod. Some aftermarket rods wear quickly. Daughter's 69 Charger had one, no sputtering, just died in the middle of the freeway.
 
Vapor lock was my first suspicion. I can try a few simple things but will need to leave the more complex diagnostics to a professional.
Indeed. Could very well be corroded cap/rotor, or even a failing coil.
My belvy did something similar years ago..... turned out to be the distributer shaft was wearing the insulation thru the points wire......
Gotta have a peek at everything.
Does a 1970 have a ballast resistor? If so, maybe defective or loose connection.

How did it run before you put gas in it? Your problem started after putting gas in it. Drain the tank and put in known good gas.

Otherwise, my next guess is the ignition coil.

We need to be working from a baseline though. Does your car have a stock or aftermarket ignition system?
 
Any of many causes could be possible. Rather than

, troubleshoot. First, at the time of the symptom, check for spark at the plug and check for fuel in the carb throat. No sense chasing one when it's the other.
