2.77:1 gear set for a 727. Does it exist from the factory?

Long ago it seems I read that these were installed in the 999 (beefy 904) that was in Cordobas. Any truth to that? I have a big block 727 tranny going together now and thought I'd slip one of those in for some low end grunt with 2.94's. So a few questions:

Is there a cheap and easy solution for the low gear set? If so who has one for sale?

Any thoughts on using that with the tall rear end as somewhat of a reverse overdrive? Or I guess underdrive. I understand the engine dynamics associated with the gear spread.

Thanks.

i've thought many times about doing the same thing. i'd go for it.

I've seen lot's of deep lows in the 904's , cordova like mentioned and amc's included, but not in the 727 from the factory, heard they might have been in some motorhomes but never seen any.

They were only in the 904 or 998. Typically the bigger cars, and late 70's. I pulled more than one of those out of the wrecking yard when I ran small blocks...

I looked at this idea when I decided to pull the Gear Vendors from my car. There were NO factory 727 transmissions built with the low gear set but aftermarket ones are out there. The $800 price scared me off.

OK, so only in the 998 and 999, not the 727. Kern, I got about the same price quote and that scared me off as well.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like it's going together as is. I'll just try and get the most efficient converter I can and run it.

How would you identify the 2.77:1 gearset? I have a 727 from a class C motorhome that's laying around doing me no good. I could tear it down and take a look if I knew what I was looking for.

Any particular reason for pulling the Gear Vendors unit out?

How bout using a later model 727 that uses the a lock up converter? However, big blocks produce a decent amount of torque and can handle the regular trans gear ratio even with 2.76 gears in the rear. Even a well tuned 383 can push a fairly heavy car pretty well with highway gears and stock transmission....

The overdrive, 4 speed torqueflites, have the low gear set but I am uncertain if they will fit in the standard, 3 speed, torqueflites.

on a side note...how do you identify which 904 trans have the low gearset. I want to put a low gearset in a 79 Volare with a 904 behind a slant six.

The drive she'll has a step in it. The standard low gear trans drive she'll has a continuous smooth radius. The 2.74 set drive shell has a step at the rear. They came in the lock up converter cars. If i remember correctly they were late 70's to mid 80's....

I sold my Gear Vendors as part of a multi point makeover of my Charger. I wanted to run a smaller cam, a tighter converter, milder axle gears... all in the interest of making the car more fun and easier to drive. I've made mistakes with the car and I'm just trying to learn from them.
The Sale of the Gear Vendors unit was two part: I didn't like how my shifter felt. The GV was an early unit without a mounting boss for the floor shifter. I had to make a hybrid/modified bracket. The geometry of the shifter wasn't terrible but it was off enough to sometimes NOT fully engage PARK or 1st gear no matter how I adjusted it. The driveshaft had to be a "slip and spline" type since the GV had a fixed yoke output. The shaft was balanced but still vibrated at speeds over 40 mph. Some of that could have been due to driveline angles but I did have the GV almost against the floor. The GV worked fine internally but the .78 overdrive really isn't great. The 500 and 518 had a .70 if I recall.
Also, the 500 was 904 based and DID have the low gearset. The 518 is 727 based and retains the 2.45 and 1.45 1st and 2nd ratio. BOTH were only built in the small block bell pattern.

I agree, but thought if the low gear set was easy to get and cheap, and since my tranny is apart, I figure I'd cheat a little. Looks like it's going together as is.
