383 build how to get close to 500 hp with out a stroker kit?

It sure is, I plan on scouting for another b body or an a body to drop the 383 in, of course after a .30 over 11:1 aluminum head treatment :)

Too bad you're in Maryland. I may have to sell my 65. It's purdy damn solid.

Thank you. We're workin on it. It would be a shame to have to sell. I almost have everything to build the engine. In fact, I DO have everything for the short block.

There is a saying - "speed costs money...how fast do you want to go?" If he has the $$$ he needs to ditch the "383" mentality and stroke the motor. Only his machinist and him will know

I agree with others that have said he needs to better define what he wants out of the car - not just an arbitrary "500hp". You can run 12s on a lot less hp than 500. Is that what he wants? Or is it to idle and run A/C? Highway driving a part of the plan? Does he mind running octane boost?

If he really only wants to spend $3k, then here's my .02 cents in priority order:

1. Spend it on heads - $1500
2. As much cam technology as will fit in the budget (read "roller cam") - $1k,
3. Upping the C/R to as much as he can stand (tight budget - mill the heads).
4. (If there is anything left) get 373 gears or lower

And for God's sake help this wayward soul. The world doesn't need another cookie cutter chevrolet.....

Something else to consider. The 383 will make almost as much power as a comparable 440. It just does it at a higher RPM.

Thats true, Rusty. My son in his 383 Super Bee can almost keep up with my 451 Road Runner! Both are similar built motors, C/R, heads, cam, intake and ex manifolds etc. 3.91 gearing both cars with auto. But I have about $2000 more in my build! Ha Ha. Sorry about your money wors. Good luck with that!

Hey you old goat. What are you missing to finish the engine?

Heads. You know about those, right? lol I got these 516s, that have good guides. I have new 2.08 and 1.74 valves, Isky 8005A springs retainers and locks. They need to spec out at 80ccs when done, because that's where I've calculated. I'm close, but that head portin money is gonna be a chunk. I'll get there. I'm actually going to have the little Hemi done before the 383, because of the head work involved. I was thinkin about it last night and I have everything to assemble the short block for it as well. I've been acquirin parts a little a long for a long time.

Old goat. That's a good one since my birthday's next Friday. lol

That is a GREAT article.

I love seeing a side by side while only changing one part.

Most times they say "... we were goona do it that way, but we ran out of time, so we just did it all at once..." (good luck figuring which was the most cost effective)

If 12's is what your looking for it takes very little....my 3500 pound 65 has a factory 383 with .528 mopar cam, headers, holley street dominate intake with an 850 do...727 with 4000 stall and 4.56 gears, I went 12.65 on the rev limiter 40 yards before the traps but rusty is right, 383 will make compatible power with a 440 just with more rpms

Do some research and see what the Plymouths and Dodges did in the 1962 Super Stock season with the 343 horse dual quad 383. I'll give you a hint. They kicked ***.

In fact, Chrysler was thinking about bringing that same engine back as an optional engine in the Road Runner. I surmise they did not, because they would have run so well, they would have competed with the 440 and Hemi.

Yup, like you said earlier the 383 is a big block with the potential to make plenty of power. Not to mention how good they compete against the HP big.block fords and chevys.

Once again proving there is a replacement for displacement-----engineering effiecency---otherwise the 390s and 396s would always win.
