with a 383 , this car went 10.73 in 1973 all steel 63 sport fury , 383 .03over 13to 1's big iron heads fully ported , huge solid roller , 850 holley , 2'' headers , 5000 rpm stall converter , 4.89 sl 8 3/4 30'' tires at 8000rpm . set record in ihra in 73 . steve reynolds owned and built it . he was cecil yothers tranny guy for the melrose cars .

I never built a 383 for any stock appearing class cars.

I did a 511 that had to look like a 383 for a FAST car.

My best friend did the typical shade tree hop ups in his 70 Roadrunner. Hotter hydraulic cam, aluminum intake, 750 4bbl, Purple Stripe springs, headers, adjustable pinion snubber...
That 383 liked to rev! He put a 3.90 in the 8¾ and as long as he didn't "overreach" he was undefeated in street races. Solid low 13 second car, on street tires.

I installed a 67 double pot master cylinder and the corect pro valve on it when I installed the Line-Loc. I still have to bend the lines.

Early to mid '70's Edelbrock single plane "X" style intake called Tarantula. B is TM6, RB is TM7. Designed for higher RPM & with slightly larger runners than a Torker. IMHO can be just as responsive as a dual plane by using the correct carb & cam combination. Low profile so they fit under a stock hood.

Bought an assembled short block from a friend, bored out, KB on the pistons, put 440 Source heads on it, Comp cam, stock rockers, tunnel ram with 390s, didn't know what I was doing really, dyno'd at 450/461.
Went to 600s, different animal.
Went to efi, different zoo, but need to modify my gas pedal as I don't have full throttle. Can hear those things sucking air like crazy, their huge!
Going timing control, different valvetrain, may change the gears.
Drive it everywhere, every day possible, never took it to the track though.
My neighbor keeps telling me to get a 440, but I don't see an issue here.

I have new built little ole +.030 383 with a Mopar 484 cam and 906 heads. Nothing spectacular. Throwing it in my 70 Road Runner in a few weeks when all the snow clears.

If you "pocket port" those 906's you'll pick up a bunch of power. My 1st pocket porting took my car from 12.30's to 11.80's. Plenty of room for improvement.

If you look at that hotrod article a stock 383, just with headers and intake and carb pulled 400 hp.

think about it; stock idle and vacuum making 400 hp... sounds pretty cool...

Thing is with 383s is to get the compression right; with a big bore & small stroke it’s easier to mess up and makes a big difference if you do.

if near stock isn’t your jam this 383 should be with over 500 hp with bolt on eddy heads, big cam, etc:

I think the Tarantula's are great. Ran both TM-7 on the RB & TM-6 on the low deck. On the TM-6 I welded those inside runner lumps and took the lump out inside of the runner to straighten it. Just elongated the manifold bolt holes enough for clearance to slide the bolt in to secure the manifold. The Tarantula's are great intake runner volume for a good moderate build, and fit under the hood.
