4 barrels and intakes are over rated on a street car

The 'teen' in my Swinger runs pretty good. It will turn the tires but not all the way down the block. I don't want or need that. (it would just get me in trouble) LOL Oh, and it get's damn near 20 mpg on the highway while cruising 4 hours north to Minnesota to a Mopar show. Works for me. I have a LD4B and a AVSII waiting. Trying to decide if I want to change the cam too. 340 manifolds and some new duals which I need badly. I still have the original modified single exhaust on it. It's getting pretty soft.

230 HP ?

Do you believe Politicians too ?
perhaps you should try educating yourself?
you do know the difference in compression actually makes a big difference in motor performance yes??
try this link here.
https://www.allpar.com/mopar/318.html

please note, that the 318 was a 9-2-1 compression motor at the start and by the end in the late 80-s it had once again become a 9-1 compression motor along with roller cams and still only produced 140/265.( net )
in 1972 it dropped down to 8-6-1 and it didnt come back till 1985.
interesting side notes..
the 1969 318 is rated at 230 hp with 340 lbs of torque at 9-2-1 compression,with a 2bbl carb.
the 1969 340 motor is rated at 275 with 340 lbs tq at 10-5-1 compression,with a 4bbl carb.
these are gross figures/factory.
the 1972 318 is rated at 150 hp and 260 tq,with a 2bbl carb.
the 1985 - 1989 318 is rated at 140hp and 265 lbs tq at 9-1 compression,with a 4bbl carb.
<< these are net,not gross.

I had 2 318 Chargers with 2.76 gears and thought they ran pretty good for what they were. Dad had a 70 318 Challenger and it was pretty peppy. A neighbor's dad had a 71 Satty 318 and it would spank em all. Same gearing, etc but that thing would burn down the tires.
We never figured out why it ran so well.

When I worked at the Trenton Engine plant in the mid 70s, there were times when a 360 cam found its way into a 318.

Calm down, bud. Lol ! I’m not claiming it to have Hemi performance. Lol ! It’s not a bad little motor. Quite frankly, this car will scoot.

I used to have a 66 Rambler American with a 232ci/2bbl 6 banger, and it would scoot too! So, what's your point?

Don't forget about your converter, too tight a converter will make it sluggish out of the hole with those sub 3 gears. Small blocks need rev's to get anything moving....

Who knows, some 318s may have had some 340 cams.
A barber I used to go to years ago bought a new Monte Carlo. Ran like stink but got terrible mileage.
They found out what was wrong. It had 4.88 gears.
I'd bet substitutions were made when parts bins were empty to keep the line going.

Sorry, but 318 and "screams" is an oxymoron.
Not your basic 318 but can you say "screams"!
318 30 / 10 to 1 compression W2 heads enderle injection on methanol 5500 stall Glide 4.88 gears 9 in 2750 with driver

Sheeit - wish my built up poly ran like this one...(well ok not quite). It's evident, despite the mega-cash invested, I failed to get more giddeeup...than anticipated. Was about to do crate 360 until the shop I was referred to talked me into rebuilding the poly. Worked out well...ahh...for the shop. I waited years before messing too much with the motor (installed 4bbl, el ig, sure grip '65 dodge rear, etc) as it ran so great. Gotta say they're durable.

what i dont see anyone mentioning is how Much basic tuning can make a huge difference too.
how many of us actually recurve our factory distributors?
( that alone makes a huge difference in both economy and performance and hardly anyone ever does it. )
dial in the timing along with the a/f ratio?
gap the plugs and make sure the heat range is optimal?
actually buy good wires for a driver?
swap the cap out for a brass contact one?
i used to do this to all my friends/customers cars and it made a noticeable difference in quite a few of them.

The title of this thread is plain wrong. The OP has compared his strong running base 318 against his poor running modified 360 and concluded that 4 barrel carbs and manifolds are overrated for the street.
The title should read "I bought a new car with a base 318 and it goes well for a 318!"

That's interesting as my dad had a '70 Nova 350 2bbl all stock, that was oddly quick. My brother, being a mechanic, was mystified by it. An old HS friend had a '68 GTO as well, all stock, that was spooky fast running times that superseded what this ride should have run as an untouched factory car. This story though I'd wondered about as he bought it used and didn't know a whole lot about wrenching on cars. I drove it and was impressed having a '67 at the time.

Your humor is well presented...I'll send you my poly 2bbl manifold with the carb - shipping should only be what...$600 to da land of Crocodile Dundee? lol

A buddy and I threw a bunch of parts at his 72 318 Demon that we had laying around. Nothing was right about this thing and yet we got a 13.51 out of it @ 102mph and backed it up. The 102 tells ya that it had a better ET to go yet.....

Ya got anymore parts in the yard? I'll send ya my motor...
