4 speed, chained...

Got a 65 Belvedere that I think spent much of it's life gettin thrashed on the street or strip. The 4spd is chained similar to a torque strap on the motor. Was this common or just one guys mod to secure the driveline?

driveshaft loops are supposed to be around the front portion of the rotating driveshaft, not the tail shaft of the transmission......I'm gonna guess he was trying to stop engine torque movement
 
Maybe the mounts toast and this kept the vibes down...
 
bolts missing that go up through the mount into the tranny?
 
That's funny! My 69 Roadrunner had a similar set up around the Automatic trans rear mount. Except it was a cable and clamp. It was to keep the trans held down to the cross member because the rubber part of the trans mount was torn in two. After taking it all apart, I spent $5.00 on a new mount from Advance Auto Parts, installed it, and used the cable as a dog leash. I guess it works as a field repair/quick fix. But I prefer using the stock type parts for repairs. Im sure you can find a new mount, and repair it right.

Man, back when I was kid, we doubled the value of one or two my buddies' car & trucks with a Sparkomatic deck, a Pyramid amp and a couple of "AlPHine" subs!!!

Love that light switch mod. Looks like a true case of "Redneck Engineering." I'd like to report that I've never done anything like that, but I'd be lying...on the other hand, I've always managed to keep "field expedient repairs" limited to "get 'er home and straighten 'er out!" for the most part.
 
Seen the home remedies before. In a temp fix, it works but it's not something I'd leave for long long. As for the chain on the trans, yup, fix it right. That probably took more time and effort than just replacing the mount and if you don't have the money to fix it right, pay a visit to a wrecking yard. There's always a car (used to be) in there with new parts. A buddy found a car with a newly rebuilt 360 that had never been fired!
 
If he ran big slicks It might have kept him from continually ripping trans mounts or when he did stopped him from breaking u-joints.Pretty good redneck engineering.
