400/512 stroker project begins.

Sorry, didn't want to hijack your thread. I think you can build a strong 400/512 without breaking the bank. You have a good start. Looking forward to your progress. watch the Hot Rod Garage build. Lucky's Fury is a beast and a pretty simple combo. The engine i started with had a lot of expensive parts. The previous owner had a Milodon gear drive, solid roller cam, aluminum roller rockers, dual carbs. Other than the heads, we went with simpler parts: solid lifter cam, steel roller rockers (1.5 ratio as opposed to the 1.6 ratio aluminum rockers), single carb, double roller timing chain. I relied heavily on a local builder who understood my budget.

My 512 440 block made 690+ on the dyno. It has a custom Comp solid flat tappet that is smaller than I think ideal for the 512. My builder took my word that I was going to street drive it & selected a cam that was a street version. Well it is mostly drag strip. Cam change is likely. I still have my GK mushroom cam that made nearly the same power as my badest roller cam. More duration & a little more lift should make more power than what I have now. A 512 low deck is the way to go.

66satellite what are the specs of the flat tap?

Which one?
The current Comp is 597/592 lift & 259/268 @.050.
The mushroom is 635/645 & 276/280.

Do you drive your car in the street? If so what's the comp 259/268 like? What are you running for a trans?

The street combo works great. I have driven some street miles
I have a 727 with a 4.10 Dana. It is great for normal street driving. on the highway at 65 or 70 the rpm seems too much (3600). The motor goes to 6500 RPM. My mushroom will go past 7400 RPM. The old mushroom cam makes pretty good power. The bigger heads should like the bigger cam.

400/511 pump gas @ 4000# through mufflers. Love it!

I should have said this Comp cam is a really good mid level street/strip cam. I'm pretty sure more duration makes more HP. The Comp is very streetable. I can make it idle at 800 RPM, although I still like 1000 RPM. The mushroom is really for the strip, but with the loose converter & 4.10 gear should not be a problem on the street either.

What stall are you running with the 4:10 s?

It is a Dynamic 9 1/2". Seems to to stall 5200. It is very good at the track. My previous converter was a Turbo Action 10" tight. Was also great for a street use.

more pic's to come. The engine was still sitting on its 1976 bearings.

I'm sure a filled block 400 with 440 Source 4.25 stroker kit will work well. The Source heads seem questionable. I've heard too many quality issues. I chose Indy with Max wedge port. A big motor wants a big intake port. Proper cam selection & really good rocker arms & valve springs are critical. In the old days I changed many valve springs, often between rounds. Get the best valve train you can. Cost is worth it.

Well it's almost ready for the machine shop. I just want to clean up some casting flash and smooth out the oil feed passage. Do you guys have any block prep tips? On the big block mopars do you guys put a small hole in one of the plugs behind the front cover to help lube the timing chain or is that a Chevy thing?

Never had any timing chain lube issues with many thousand runs with a stock system. Flashing cleanup especially in the valley area is good thing.

I got my rotating assembly. It's not hard to guess who makes the rods and pistons. Does anyone know who makes the cranks? I test fit all the pins and they all fit perfectly. I'm going to be slowly getting the parts that are left to get for the build over the course of the winter.
