I just picked up a 440 from a motor home and it needs a rebuild. When it comes to motors, I can troubleshoot externals and replace parts all day but for a complete rebuild, forget it. I'd like to be able to drive the car without stopping at every gas station, so what are some things to do and look for? I know it sounds contradictory, but I'd still like some power. I just don't want the engine so noisy it's not an enjoyable car to drive and still listen to radio. And, since I don't believe I can rebuild it, what are some good shops in the Houston area?
Thanks

The 440 in my green Belvedere is a very good and cheap recipe. You can find the details in the 12 second combo thread. Basically it's a mild hydraulic cammed motor that can live for many thousand miles and burn the rear tires to the rims if you want. The 4000 lb car runs high 12's with slicks and can be driven every day if desired.

Dad had a 77 New Yorker that got 17 on the highway back then which isn't too bad considering the low compression no quench engine. I know there's a shop on the north side that's supposed to do pretty good work but right now the place I use is City Machine in Rosenberg. It looks like a hole in the wall but they do damn good work and know Mopars very well. The guy that did my machine work moved to Kerrville several years ago but will haul long term projects to him when I visit. Been friends with him since the mid 70's.

Meep Meep any chance you could drop a link to that thread? Spent a bit of time searching it out.. guess I am not forum Savvy yet.

Dennis at Faermans Racing Engines is awesome and been in business for 25+ years. Knows his stuff and will build mild to wild. We used to stop buy when we were teenagers just to watch...I know he is a big ford guy but am sure he knows mopars.
