Trying to decode my 440. getting conflicting web info.
could any of you guys be kind enough to take a look, and let me know? please?
might be a trenton engine, 1953? premium fuel? built for export?
stamped on machined surface, bottom, near trans.
PT440P227907
12 digits, i have also found that there should be 14.
engine is not original to car. i do have the numbers matching 318 in the shed. with it's trans, which should also be # matching
and, where would the 727 would be stamped?
thank you for looking

Up front towards the distributor there's an ID pad you need the numbers from there should be something like "F440"

I probably have the same exact interpretation you got:
PT = Trenton
440 = 2536430
P = Premium
2279 = Oct 24, 1967
07 = 7th built that day

727 VINs stamped on top of the bellhousing, but probably only has it 69-later. Or are you talking about the transmission ID number lower left side?

Love some pictures!

Nice 'vert. Curious on the trans being taken out, go with a new 4sp for the 440 or just matching the big block with a 727?

D440= 1968 440 CID engine
10 24 = 24 Oct 1968 build date
B= Installed in B body

Oh, thats what i got told once that the letter in the top right stands for the body type it came in.

Does that mean when the engine was overhauled they machined these?
So after the overhaul someone added this "B" on there?

No that means when the engine was being assembled the crank, or rods or whatever the marking is referring to did not meet spec

Ok, so as new the mentioned component did not meet it's correct dimensions.
Learned something again today!
