.45 self defense

After Hurricane Katrina, we got a pretty large influx of Nawlins 'refugees' and with all the illegals coming to Houston looking for a new life, the legal citizen's lives have forever changed. The major oil down turn hasn't helped either I'm sure. I live in a suburb of Houston where you hardly ever heard of home invasions many years ago but now, we're hearing more and more and not so much through the main stream new media. If you do hear something through the main stream news it's because someone was murdered. Several years ago a new road was plowed right through the middle of our neighborhood and 8 houses were hit during the construction of that bastard. And every so often someone knocks on the door looking for some address that doesn't exist out here. Told one guy there was no such address but when he left, he went a couple of houses down and knocked on a neighbor's door. That's when I called the police and he was promptly arrested. We have a decent police response out here but we still have several break ins a year and this neighborhood isn't that big. The city's population is 34000 and the unemployment rate is less than 4% (that stat is nearly a year old....I'm sure it's higher now) and yet we still have several break ins a week. Most of them are young adults and the majority is drug related.

Anyways, always wanted a BB gun as a kid but I'm sure dad knew what I would do with it so, never had one and he was probably right in his thinking. I had shot a 22 rifle for the first time when I was 13 and my first shot was dead center. Man, this is easy......lucky shot was what that was lol. It was several years later before shooting again and that was in the military. Ended up in law enforcement in the AF and then it was several more years before buying my first weapon, a .357 and that happened because of my sister and her rocky marriage to a marine and his penchant to drink too much from time to time and waving the .357 about. Got it for 50 bucks and the ball finally got rolling with more purchases over the years. Didn't like carrying a .38 in the military too much back then but now, I feel naked when I'm not carrying.

Look into the actual ballistic tests of high-performance self-defense ammo. It all kills, quite well. Of course, if you can't shoot worth a ****....you're probably better off with a lucky 45 hit to an extremity.

Sure feels good to have a friend in the house that you can count on.

True That!!

I own a few firearms and both the wife and I are comfortable and competent using them. However I think the fear that is displayed as the driving force for the OP is a little overblown. I don't think there are many giants running around doing home invasions. Personally I think these things have just been overblown by the media who just love to play up fear. The likelihood of getting massacred is probably close to getting struck by lightning. Now where is my lightning rod hat...

8 home invasions that we know about in a ten mile radius...
Not on the news, but on the police scanner (my kin are with "citizens on patrol").
What's fueling the crime?
Drugs... It's not just a big city problem anymore...
Our small towns are like some bad "B" movie where the town is run by bad guys.
Alberta is a rich province, but the oilfield is dead. There are no jobs...
Just like the USA has been struggling for years...
People are desperate, and desperate people do desperate things...
And I am desperate to keep my family & friends safe...

That ammo is called 'safe' ammo as it doesn't bounce off of a bone or continue through the body. It's safe because it doesn't have much of a chance to hit anyone else that might be near by that is innocent.....and stays in the body of the criminal.

Earlier I explained the Taurus Judge I bought my wife.
She's actually my ex now, but I care about her the same, especially
since we live apart. We are still best friends, I'm invited to all family functions & we share custody of a beautiful little rescue dog... It's the best of a lousy situation.
Anyway, the Judge loaded with various .410 defence rounds is a viable home defence round in that there are a few projectiles, harmful enough, yet most likely won't go through the walls of your house.
Another thing is the HS .410 Mossberg she has, shoots the same defence .410 rounds or any other .410 rounds... But the end of the barrel is a recoil reducing type brake, and a horizontal spreader choke... Just made for a close encounter when stressed beyond imagination.
We used to meet every Wednsday afternoon at the range, swap the dog, shoot for an hour or so... Until her medical profession job hours were changed.
the shooting fun is practice in disguise. I don't have the answers to keep anyone safe, of you're not a psychopath, it's hard to think like one. this is just discussion sharing experiences & possible prevention, and safety...
It's a good thread for thought! I know talking cars and asking about cylinder heads is a lot more fun than asking for a suggested defence caliber, or how we can protect our loved ones... But If one idea or suggestion, or for example bladecutters heart breaking loss of his mother experience saves even one of our loved one from the horror of violence, it has been a very worthwhile topic!!
My hope is the none of us, me & you & all our friends and family ever have to face such evil! I truly hope that...

I considered the Judge but went with the 38 S&W Airweight Snubby. Up close. Personal. Revolvers easier to reload for Linda too.

Thanks Bladecutter...

Handgun in home is good, except were do you keep it that you can get to it in a hurry when you have young kids in the house. As the gentleman in a above thread pointed out his home was robbed while he slept! My house is extremely secure and we will hear anyone trying to get access. HOWEVER,if your that worried about security and like animals, consider this dog, smart ,loyal, extremely protective

Yeah up here in communist Canada handguns with less than a 4.15" bbl & I'd say 4.25" because you can't trust the guy measuring, are Prohibited. That's why I got oher 6 1/2" bbl cut down to 4.25". Otherwise I may have even gone with the 2 1/2" version. Since we couldn't have longer barrels up here, I never paid much attention to "snubbies". Not until I was re-reading Chuck Taylors handgun defence book that I realized just how accurate they can be. I use to have a U.S. carry concealed permit for a western state that uses to make it available for Canucks. So, on my then frequent visits I carried a Kimber .45acp. But like they say the best gun is the one with you! So I totally understand a lady carrying the smallest effective pistol, instead of leaving the big heavy gun at home. Besides, even tho I was married for a good while, I still don't know what them ladies carry in those purses...
I don't want to know... Lol!

I'm a very light sleeper unless I've had a few beers and even that is getting less and less these days. My kids are grown and gone and only have one young grand kid now and I lock up the bed room when that little monster is here lol. On dogs....they are cool and I like them but my wife is allergic to the dander and I ain't about to get no hair less dog. :D Believe it or not, our prairie dogs (have 3) usually alert us whenever someone comes to the house but not too sure if they would at night....they make you wonder if they are alive or not when those little suckers are knocked out! Man, never seen an animal that sleeps so hard.

Just picked up a Bond Arms Derringer for the bedroom. The Barrel I bought will shoot both a .45 and a 2-1/2" .410 shotgun round. DW likes it for the size and power.

My new wife was introduced to life here in Alaska with a variety of new adventures. Fishing, four wheeling and being more a part of nature then just watching it on TV as she had done before. Part of that education means she had to be aware of the many ways you can get killed up here, hypothermia, drowning as well as the rare but potentially dangerous aspect of getting around a mother grizzly with cubs. The wife said she wanted to learn to shoot so I bought a 9mm Glock for her, like my 40 cal. She picked up shooting the 9mm very fast with no fear and asked if she could shoot the 40 cal? She was pretty good with the 9mm but her proficiency with the 40 cal was scary! She said the weight and balance made it easier to get on target and stay there as she squeezed the rounds off, at 40 feet she is deadly. I have taught her the way to handle it, reload and that once she commits to shooting to empty the clip until there is no movement from her target. She feels much more capable to handle situations at home or in the woods and I feel great about her safety and ability to be my backup in deadly situations. Your girls AND your wives need to learn gun safety and how to use it to protect themselves as well as others. Most times you only get one chance in a deadly situation, all of us need to have the training and ability to act appropriately.

I concur usaroadrunner

Sounds like you raised a great lady too...

I taught all my kids, 4 girls {3 mine & my niece I raised}
2 boys {my son & my nephew I raised}
all how to shoot & defend themselves

a gamut of weapons from a starter BB-gun to a
0.22 ca. Ruger revolver to a 10/22 Ruger rifle when they were 10y/o or so
once they should they could be responsible & handle them safely & proficiently
they were able to shoot Winchester .270mag
Remington 30-06
Winchester, Marlin {.44 mag} & Henrey's 30ca. model 94 lever action rifles
A few .410, 20ga., 12 ga. shotguns
FN Browning or Berretta 9mm
several different Colt Combat Commander & 1911 or AMT Longslide .45acp's
L & N frame S&W revolvers 38ca.-.35mag & .44 special/mag
among a few others
they were all proficient in cleaning & safety too

IMO it's a great thing to do with the family

I built & ran/managed an indoor pistol/shooting range in Milpitas Ca.
Target Masters for about 5 years, before I moved to Alaska in the 80's...

Very nice budnicks, to bad you weren't closer we would have good time shooting all those. I showed my youngest all the guns an she held most of them but she knows not to touch them with out me checking them that there umloaded. But I have a huge safe in the basement that houses all of them. So when I'm not home or the babysitter there, they are all locked up an unloaded. At the bed side it's in a holster in front of me under the head board at night or there just sitting in the safe. Great feedback from everyone, thanks to everyone and be safe god bless.
