62 Belvedere 318 poly granny cruiser (one day i hope)

Spent last night with a propane torch and putty knife getting undercoating out of the wheel wells (Goo away didn't do a thing) torch works super fast then a quick run over it with a paint remover wheel and they look like new :) I am curious.. do you guys mostly do gloss/satin black in the wells or trunk liner/undercoat?

Got a bit of the well lips re-made, i need to figure how to make them look more stock though, they are so flat/smooth it looks like the inside of a 50gal barrel..

Got a bit done this weekend, i need to work more than 2 hours at a time though.. i would get a lot more done if iput in some more time:) (had to stop since i have no idea how the lip/inner well is shaped in this area, waiting on some pics..
How it started..

Not amazing but not a giant hole of rust :) This spot is the worst on the whole car, going to be happy once it's fixed.

Learned a good lesson bout flash rust and not cleaning too much bare metal... had no issue for a couple of weeks, then got hot and humid and took me hours to get rid of the surface rust and finally put a coat of paint on it.. Not show car stuff but good enough for a beater, still have a bunch to do but glad to have it covered now..
Also.. used the english wheel for the first time tonight, i can see how it's a learned skill, doing a easy piece first which is still taking a lot of time, want to get it as perfect as i can..

I think that is looking pretty good. That is a skill you will be glad you have in the future. Practice will get you where you can make just about any panel. Keep at it. Looking good.

Back in 13, I took some classes by Laze Jansen ,lazzemetalshaping.com, up in Pleasonton to learn how to use the wheel, shrinker/stretcher and bead roller. I will be giving myself refresher lessons when I make up filler panels for the floor of my car[ currently cut up for sfc's, seat mounts etc] to fill in where I cut material out, make up a new trans/driveshaft tunnel etc. I have not used my machines for the last 6 years so I figure the floor is a good place to start. It does take some time to figure out how to do it but just be patient. Lazze has multiple vids on YouTube to watch if that will help you.

yup, been watching vids :) I sent back my bead roller, realized i will never need it. The money can go to something else. The odd thing about the wheel is keeping the metal in it, it's kind of like backing up a trailer, everything is sort of backwards if you get on a angle..

A little more done last night... it came out ok, not great.. the last spot i did was that compound curve at the front and it has a dip in it i didn't see til i was done. Might cut it out, might use a bit of filler. not sure yet.. also have to hammer the bottom lip a bit straighter, for my first attempt i'm ok with it..

When people look at my NOT so perfect body work I just tell them " I am old and woreout, I get rid of the rust, get it straight enough for me, IF you see a run, it is because I used enough PAINT, and I will drive it and it will never see BJ auctions,.... and besides I did not spend $10,000 and have my car is paint jail for two years!!!!!!!!

That's kind what i'm doing.. i like a car i don't need to worry bout getting a ding on :) I didn't get the radius quite right on that patch but it's around the bottom curve so no biggy.. i'm just happy it's metal again :) The spot i have to do in front of the rear wheels is pretty big though, that one has me a big scared but i will get it.

A little progress this week... came out ok, except where i welded it in the rear it sucked inward bout 1/4 of an inch and no idea why.. kept it cool as possible so i have a dip there, going to have to use more filler than i wanted to :(
Replaced the metal behind it first..

I am a bit mat at myself though, i have been painting the back of pieces as i add them, the piece below i got about half way done and realized i forgot to paint it :( ah well.

AHHH thank you!! it must be that one, i assume you can gently squeeze and push it out? I don't know why, but removing all this trim stresses me, all my old cars like challengers and such never had this much (cept my 64 polara which i never had to remove)

BTW.. i know this isn't a lot of trim.. i follow a guy on youtube that spliced 2 '60 furys and made and amazing car (which is weeks from being done after years..) for anyone that hasn't seen it, one of my favorite channels, just old stoners having fun, the guy does really great work though.

Actually, it was the Fury and a Dodge! Scott and company have been a favorite YT channel of mine
for over a decade now. As you probably know, in the latest episode, he had the car out in the sunshine.
It was glorious.

Yeah, he is one reason i am trying to do my own stuff.. between him and fitzee :) Scott makes it look soooo easy.. that quarter for the mk2 lincoln... what a nightmare..
The trim on the fury though... he is a madman..

Classically trained metal/body guy and yeah - the way he spends countless hours restoring trim is, for whatever
reason, mesmerizing to watch.

Yeah, i have some dings in my trim.. and one spot is creased, i'm going to try to fix it once i figure how to get it off the car.. trim for a 62 seems impossible to find, i'm lucky i have all of mine at least..

Well, i have a quarter panel... it's not amazing but once filled it should be passable.. I need to do a bit of the inner lip still but just glad it's not a giant hole anymore..

Drivers quarter all done.. at least the metal work.. back of the passenger one is done also (i took a couple of week off, lost motivation) working on the wheel lip now which is the most tedious part :(
I had a question though for anyone that reads this.. i have cleaned the inner wheel wells down to bare metal and then painted them in gloss black to keep them from rusting.. I am considering undercoating the wheel wells and behind them (trunk extensions) to keep noise down and protect them more from rocks.. but i would prefer to keep the floors just painted black as it looks better and not like i'm hiding bad work. Does this sound like it would be an odd choice?

Sounds good to me. Just keep up with the paint underneath if is chips or bubbles.

A bit of progress, got the passenger quarter done (not body work yet, just replacing metal).. 5 months to do both sides.. i am slow.. Getting ready to put the rear end back in.. gas tank and all that. Wish i had upgraded the fuel line at the same time but will worry bout that once i figure out which motor i will run (Already bought a 5/16 sending unit... always making mistakes) :)

Waiting on inner seals and gaskets to put my rear end back together, then in the car finally :) Ended up ordering all new brake parts except backing plate (which i would probably buy if i could find them) Ended up around $250 for everything which is less than expected. My backing plates are insanely pitted on the inside but still solid. I am thinking i will sand the contact pads a but to smooth them out or add some weld and then grind them smooth..

P.S. i bought a 1962 service manual and for the rear axle it shows flanges axles and doesn't even mention tapered.. WTF is that :)

I just read your posts and really like what you are doing. The 62 Plymouth B has always been my favorite but elusive.
I'm on my 3rd 63 and had a 64 and 65. Your sludge was and is very common on those engines because of the type of oil they used back then.
I remember pulling valve covers on a Poly 318 way back in 1973 and a quart of oil dumped out of each ! The oil drain back holes were sludged over.
The car came in with a flickering oil light.Reamed the holes out with coat hangers ran the valves and sent it on it's way. Dang thing ran like a clock.
Just food for thought you can make the Poly 318 really run. The photo I will post is a 390 stroker that we did from the stock 318 in a 64 Dodge.
Nothing wrong with any way you go,383,Small block LA or Magnum, what ever you budget allows.
Anyway keep up the good work !! Just some eye candy for you.
