Can someone tell me if a 74 A Body spindle would be a good option for my conversion, I hear issues on camber albeit minimal may be a factor ?

Or the upgrade conversion kits from various vendors would be closer to the B body specs ?

Just looking for some info.

The pictures are what I have from a 74 A Body.

thx

SSBC make s a complete disc brake conversion kit for the '65 that uses your stock drum brake spindles - check it out at Summit - the manual disc brake kit - I think is A-156 - but better check on that to make sure - it comes complete with master cylinder and an adjustable proportioning valve - has everything you need.

i run my 63 savoy with the 73 and up a body kit and have no problem at all and is not expensive

I was also wondering if swapping to the A body spindle would be a much cheaper option parts wise. The SSBC kit is 1000.00 I assume partially to all the retrofit parts for the original spindle etc...

Obviously, the #1 question is will it work and work well.

thx for all the replies.

The "A" body conversion is a tried and proven system that works very well, and its quite a bit cheaper than the commercially available systems that are out there.

I'm doing the "A" body conversion on my '64 Polara and the total cost should be under $400. The spindles and caliper mounts I picked up on e-bay for $80 and the rest of the parts from Rock Auto.... calipers $50 ea, Rotors, $40 ea. master cylinder (manual) $50, and a Classic Industries proportioning valve at $50.

I'm cheap so those $1000 kits are not something I'm prepared to buy when I can assemble something that is proven to work for a whole lot less.

That SSBC kit at Summit is only $685 - one stop shopping and everything is right and fits together, plus the shipping is free. I think in the long run, you're not saving that much, if any.

I'll spend less than $400 and your quote is almost $700 not counting the master cylinder and proportioning valve. That's a 43% difference plus the cost of the MC and valve, which is a pretty substantial savings in my book.

For those that have done the A Body swap did you convert to power brakes ? If yes, did you use a power booster from an older car or buy a new one ?

I did not provide a link - the part number for the kit I used is A156 and yes it does include the master cylinder and proportioning valve. No it does not include a booster as it is a manual disc brake kit, which is what I wanted. The power brake kit is A156-1 and it does include the booster, master cylinder and proportioning valve. It is quite a bit more expensive as well running about $800. The manual kit being $685, which I didn't think was bad at all, considering it is a complete kit. Yes, if you want to scavenge for parts and then wait for them to all come in you might save a few bucks. To me it's worth the few dollars more to make one call and get it all together, knowing it'll all work and it comes in at once with no shipping cost or delay. To each his own.

My apologies.. you did not post that link... my bad.

For someone who wants one stop shopping that kit is probably a good deal, however i have always found that saving money is worth a little inconvenience, but you're right.. to each his own.

Mirada stuff will work, and is good if your car has been beat on at all,the spindles are longer and tend to give you better camber on older cars
