67 GTX authentification

I'm looking at purchasing an 67 GTX Hemi car. All the vin code and fender tag numbers say its a hemi car but i'm still not completely convinced. The vin tag has the correct rivets in and is still on the body. But when i looked at the car today i found the firewall had holes for a/c but not sure they're factory cut outs. The front rad support has been changed so i can't match the id number from the vin tag. When i looked inside the quarters and doors i found trim holes that have been welded up like would have been on a Belevere II car. In some pictures of the car before all the paint was striped the floor pans are red and found traces of red behind where the quarter extensions go. The car has what appear to be factory torque boxes in front of the rear spring hangers, but nothing in the rear. the roof rail area under the weatherstrip holders is yellow the color the fender tag decodes to. All the Hemi correct stuff is there ,radiator with correct number, p/s pump with cooler, ect. Is there another place to find the id number from the fender tag on the body i looked around the trunk area but could find nothing. Oh the engine is not the original as it has a casting date of 1-15-68 so it could be a warranty replacement engine. Any opinions on this one would help greatly.

67 hemi??

Your spider senses are rightly alerted. At best it sounds like a wrecked hemi car that had a lot of body panels replaced. Look and see evidence of a full qtpl replacement. The Bel 2 holes are a good clue of switched panels to be sure. Naturally the 426 would not have a/c so holes are a tip off. The torque boxes on front of spring perches are good.
Rear vin numbers are on panel behind the rear bumper or under the trunk gasket, usually on the left of the car. For a hemi car I would demand to take off the gasket and the bumper to verify.
All other parts on the engine mean nothing as any good resto person can and should want to get the correct parts to put on it. Especially to fake it.

This car has been apart for some time now.i was told yesterday it has had the paint stripped of it for about 4 years now. So its easy to see whats lying underneath its completely apart no weatherstriping or bumpers on car. I looked all around the trunk opening and couldn't find anything. The rear bumper panel under the gasket still had undercoating on it. I'll have to call and ask the guy to look there for it

Many Mopar people are not aware that the torque boxes are not always present on the earlier Hemi cars BUT that ALL Hemi cars will have a somewhat triangular shaped brace between the unibody and the back of the rear spring bracket AND a second pinion snubber floor reinforcement plate welded over the 1st snubber plate on the floor of the car.

If they are not there someone has made some changes to this car.

Also look where the front leaf spring bracket bolts up. It should be reinforced on both sides

That is because 67s don't have the SO number there. It will be on the rad. core support and sometimes on the rear unibody cross frame under the rear bumper on the right side. But it is usually only 50/50 chance of it being stamped at the factory.

BTW, it is not the V.I.N. you are looking for in these places it is the SO number which is on both the fender tag and the broadcast sheet. You can also pay Chrysler Histortical $50. for the IBM card if they have it and it will tie the V.I.N. to the SO number. The SO numbers were the hidden numbers on 198 and older cars.

Well I think this was rebodied car then because it only has torque boxes in front of the spring hangers and no plates in the rear. If it was rebodied i think it was done along time ago. Maybe the original car was badly damaged in an accident and all Hemi parts were transferred to this body. Who knows.

they're asking 40k for the car, the Hemi and trans are rebuilt and all the chrome has been replated also the seats are done. might be able to get everything for 37k

I would think if it was a real McCoy, it would be slightly higher then that. How much work or any is need on it?

It's a GTX which is a good thing, but 66 and 67 Hemi cars don't bring anything close to the money that the later ones do. The exception to that rule would be an "RO" car

Thanks for the pic. I found lots of pics of those reinforcement plates and have concluded that this car is a very early rebody. Don't know the history so can't say if it was done legally thru a DMV of not.

BUYER BEWARE ! , You have check these out really good, and 696pack is 100% correct on the braces and 2nd snubber plate, I looked at a 70 Charger R/T that was claimed to be a true Hemi car two weeks ago, it was a re-body,....I passed on it, they only have there original body once and I like my Hemi cars GENUINE.
