68 GTX Project

Looks good! Are your wheel tubs welded in? If your thinking of big tires or lowering the car I'd suggest dehumping them.

Yes, welded in.....except for the stuff that I need to get to with the quarters off. I'm looking to go as OEM as possible so didn't want to modify the wheel houses. I will poke as large of tires / wheels in there as I can, but not looking to go extreme.

Some recent activity on the battery tray and accessories on the front of the engine including rebuilding the small TRW power steering pump. Been interesting learning about that little POS power steering pump. Anywho sourced all the o-rings and seal online and debating on how to hold the rotor to the shaft.

Power Steering Pump rebuild continued...why go the typical easy Saginaw route? Paths less traveled.

Ok, interested. Where did you get rebuild parts for the pump? I never knew they could be rebuilt. Very cool!
the water pump or the old *** throw it in the garbage non-Saginaw PS pump?

Yes they are being rebuilt all the time. It's a special skill/tool/machine set to make it happen properly. In particular the mechanical seals. They are rather finicky.

Here is one guy I contacted, but don't think I ever heard back from him.

Here is some reference on seals/bearings

As I recall this is the guy I got the bearing / seal from ~ $40

The flying dutchman is another one I contacted....he is a character, but well informed and capable or rebuilding your pump for ~ $125 he will sell you a kit, but more expensive and suggest that he does the work for you instead. Rightly so as I said seals are finicky.

anywho, questions, hit me up....my car is going to rock an original water pump....YEAH its a hell of a lot easier to buy a $30 Chinese knock off....I take roads less traveled.

Water pump reassembly. Set my impeller clearance around .030" That clearance is the big factor for pump performance / efficiency. The three pumps I took apart had quite wide clearances....to the tune of .100 to .200"! Had to make some specific tools for pressing things together without damaging anything and setting hopefully a reasonable mechanical seal pre-load.

Hi yalls, thought I'd start a thread and share some pixs of my project. It is a "fairly" solid GTX. I'm starting in the back and starting to replace all the floor panels.

Bad day hauling the new "parts" car home! 3 hours waiting for u-haul to fix the flat tire

The parts car (69 GTX as found) too bad it was smash so bad in the late '70s I'm told.

Spent the day getting it off the trailer and peeling the metal off the front of car exposing what I'm told is the numbers matching 440. So far it looks like the motor survived the crash expect for the water pump housing (hit me up if you have one forsale!)

Then of course is the scrap pile getting ready to be turned into a new Hyundai after I strip all the OEM fasteners and anything else usable.

im surprised nowadays that might be a saver ive seen worst on graveyard cars returned to life

Update...

Kinda miffed at a few things! New Parts arrived from Brewers.

First, I feel like I should use my old tail shaft bushing verses the new one? There are many things that just feel and are subpar about the new one. The "worn" OEM one has similar tolerances.

Second. I ordered what appeared to be a solid steel shaft for setting up the counter gear needle bearings and got a shitty piece of 3/4" EMT conduit? WTH
Well was thinking I should make my own, but didn't YET. And the conduit was filled with grinding grit to boot. Not soo good when assembling a needle bearing assembly. First pix is brewers assembly shaft on the web page and later in the pixs is what was delivered.

Yawns.....friday night *******. I'm sure Brewers will help me resolve this as soon as I ask.....first class joint, not throwing them totally under the bus!
