69 Charger quarter extension gap

as already been mentioned......without being there, I'd say you either welded the tail light panel on without having the trunk lid and extensions mocked up....... Or the new metal simply needs to be modified in some manner

when I build the back of a B body the FIRST thing I do is bolt on the trunk lid, lined up with the original dutchman, quarters, and tail light panel. I set it up as close to perfect as possible........ with trunk lid in place and bolts tight, it stays there during the entire process..... the trunk lid is kind of a fixture, you can almost dispose of any tape measure at this point.

now the dutchman, quarters, and tail light panel can be removed....... bring the new sheet metal to the trunk lid. the lid will tell you everything you need to know

mock everything up with screws, bolt on the quarter extensions where they need to be

the trunk lid will dictate the position of the extensions....... at this point putting a couple slices in the new sheet metal is not un common....... even AMD stuff seems to be hit and miss...... I go into these jobs expecting to slice and dice; and never weld them up without mocking it all up as a unit

You are right, I did not have the deck lid on when I welded every thing up. I did have it on in mock up holding everything with screws. O well, LIVE and LEARN!

I wish I had a before pic, but I didn’t take one. I spent a lot of time on the tail end trying to get things right.
I finally took the quarter panel extension off and stuck in the vise and gave it a twist!
The chipped up area at the trunk lidwas in the vise. Twisted it with some channellocks and it’s perfect.

Hey Don. It sounds like bighouse twisted his extensions in a vise successfully. If you have spare set of extensions it might be worth a try.

Where did you find his comment? Another thread?

Hey I saw this thread a week or so ago and was looking at the pics posted of the area.
My passenger side extension didn’t match the drivers no matter what I did. The bottom of the edge near the trunk lid stuck out and didn’t match the quarter and was making me crazy.
It stuck about 1/4 of an inch of the trunk lid side of the extension in a vise and about an inch up grabbed it with some pliers and just gave it a little tweak. Not really a bend, but just beyond the springy-ness of the metal.
2 or 3 twists and it was good to go. I didnt take my car apart and don’t know what they looked like before.
It was almost as is my extension was warped.
I’ll take a pic in the vise when I can get out to the garage and post it up here. See if I can mimic the before look. I wish I took a pic.

This is all I did. Now both sides match the trunk lid edge. I’m still tweaking the Q/P to tail panel areas under where they mount. But this gave me a huuuuge boost in mailing things right.

Don, I pulled mine out of storage today to check my fit. Just sliding them in they had a bit of a gap at the trunk opening, but disappeared after tightening the nuts. Several of the pieces I have are warped more than others. So I think it's just finding the right ones or twerking what you have.

Thanks Sarge. I still have to get back to this but will try to tweek mine a bit
