69 RR lives, BUT.......

Hey I got a compliment right on! ;)

I usually break in my flat tappet engines sans thermostat in case it sticks while breaking in the cam. Nothing wrong with that at all. As said check timing. To the OP, don't feel too bad they tried to run me off when I showed up too. As usual lots of talk from guys with cars that don't run.

Yeah, ok. None of my cars run. Did you and your wife both lose your job this year? Are you disabled in such a way that you cannot stand for more than 30 minutes at a time? I bet you even have friends that come hang out and help. I don't have anybody close enough. I'd love to have something running. But the fact is, I may have to end up selling everything to make up for not having any income to speak of. I'm sure you're probably glad to hear that, too. I'm real glad everything is perfect in your world. I am. I'm glad to see at least somebody can drag an old MoPar outta the woods, get it running again and save it. That was a really cool thing for you to do. You did a nice job on it, too, so far. But there's no need in you constantly sticking your nose in everywhere you possibly can trying to make me feel any worse than I already do about my own situation. That's a pretty unChristian and petty thing for you to do. But I don't hold grudges. All I can do is wish you the best on your endeavors. You obviously don't wish me the same.

That's kinda funny right there.

No, it was hurtful and spiteful and totally unnecessary. But at least now I know where I stand with some folks around here.

My junk is currently not running right now either. I'm working on it though. I know your in a bad way rusty, I don't think he meant anything personal. And i won't tell you to relax cause that will probably just piss you off even more. I know it does when life is kicking my ***. Just sayin, I don't think he was trying to make it personal. Wish I was closer, I would come work on your car. And I'm sure I would learn a thing or 2 while doing it.

Thanks. I appreciate it. But this is more than once or twice he's said unnecessary things. I was firing back for a while, but I stopped.....and I even complimented him in his Coronet thread. I was trying to bridge the gap.

And as far as learnin somethin.....I'm quite positive that would go both ways.

Well....back to the original thread. :)

I bought a 180* Tstat today and it will be in place tomorrow night. I don't have plans on starting it again until our mechanic can come out. But at least it SHOULD be ready to fire up again.

Cool.....hopefully literally. I take for granted this isn't a stock Hemi. As such, you should be aware with a pretty lumpy cam it could need as much as 20 or more degrees initial timing. Just food for thought.

I read this whole thread.A lot of unneeded hostility. If I had problems I,d be pissed off and wouldnt like all the negativity either. Looked like a pile on from here.

Whatever you say man. You of all people I would think would know I try to help everybody I can, even those who might not think I like them. Maybe I just need to vacate for a while. Keep my help to myself for a while.

if your running the engine at 2500 sitting still there is not enough air flow through the radiator for 1 , when there is no load on the engine you will run lean causing it to heat
up the jet size during break in and put a large fan in front of the car, or just run water from a hose on low though radiator till you done with break in , then drain and put antifreeze in
Yes I am a mechanic for many years

UPDATE.....

Put the 180* stat in. Borrowed an infrared temp gun (very cool by the way)

radiator was full, cap off....started it up and ran it at 2300ish RPMs after about 10-15 seconds, the coolant was spewing out of the neck of the rad. It stopped doing that so I added more coolant. Ran great for 3-4 minutes....header temp was about 700-800* water pump housing was about 160*, engine block was about 180* then it started spewing out more coolant. I added more, ran it for 5-6 more minutes...water pump housing 180ish degrees, engine block 220*, header temp 750-850*...spewed out more coolant, (I was out of extra coolant so I shut it down)

Should I have done this with the cap on??? Call me an idiot, but I thought you could do this with the cap off???

Let me know what you think....

No it's a pressurized system, that overflows when needed that's why they made catch cans or bottles. Let it burp out what it needs to. I overfilled mine while breaking in the motor and it would self level it's self so to speak and spew out the extra. You need to have air flow in front of the car or drive it. without it your not going to get realistic readings just real super hot ones. give the stat time to open once your at temp or even past temp for a minute or two.

So i'm reading your update again and thinking hmm those numbers seem pretty normal. Spewed out coolant probably air pocket so it burped OK good, except maybe not add more coolant let it run the burping course sounds dumb but at least you will know if the stat is open when the level dropped real low in the rad tank. then add when at temp if needed, catch cans should get the overflow and then hold it until the rad needs it again or catches so much extra that has been put in.

If you still feel like your not making progress, drain all the water out and start over.

don't take the constructive advice personally. People are shocked that someone would shell out that kind of money and not know the protocols for a break-in. Also, I have some cars and don't know what I'm doing. I get on here, ask questions, and get advice I could never get anywhere else...from people who have been there and done that and not only know what they are talking about, but are interested in saving other members headaches and money. Some of my ideas and suggestions aren't so good. I post and those who know let me know what is wrong with what I have planned. But then they take you under their wing, and like I said, give you advice and knowledge you couldn't get without their experience. If someone on here wants to "beat up" on me in order to save me from my ignorance, I'm all ears.

I thought all those temps looked pretty good as well.

Here's what I'm thinking of doing....

Take the t-stat housing off remove the t-stat and fill the block with coolant.
Put T-stat housing WITH t-stat installed back on.
Fill the radiator.

If you were me, would you then run it with the cap on, or cap off.

I do have a catch can installed if that is of any importance. I also have a 14lb (I think) radiator cap...i need to double check that though.

if it burbs out it will do it in the catch can if the caps on, cap off and you have a mess on the ground ;) and air still in the line cuz caps off. i.e. open hole air being drawn in vs sealed overflow going to can.
