each new post im on the edge of my seat waiting to see whats next....THIS CAR IS GONNA BE EPIC!!!!!!!!!!

LOL, I got pulled off this project to help a couple of buddies out so I haven't accomplished much besides mounting the fiberglass hood from Glasstek

Then we fitted the hinges with a set of lighter springs that Glasstek supplied

We also played around some with ride height on drag radials. It might not go as low as I want with the top of the wheel tub being the limiting factor. It will still be a couple inches lower than my other RR.

Found a little time to work on the car. I decided I wanted to check my posterboard template for fit by making a metal template. I transferred the template to some 20gauge.

I zipped it out with some electric shears and trimmed it up.

I started bending up the flanges with some cheap folding pliers so I used the poster board template as a guide. This isn't the finished part, so the bends don't have to be real crisp.

With the edges folded up, it started to take shape.

The fit revealed some areas that needed attention so I will have to make changes to the poster board template before I cut the final pieces. I also need to make a right hand version to see if the same template can be used for both sides.

It's not perfect, but for a hand formed template that took all of 20minutes, it's a promising sign that the finished version will be much better. I still need to make the nose mount so that the nose is in it's final position to get it right.

I love this thread! This car is goin to be soooo awsome and I get to live my dreams through your thread,, eyes and of course your wallet lol

I also worked a little on my K-member. For this car, I'm doing a modified version of the AlterKtion for the front. The K-member differs in that the mounts are the 2x2 tube and I've moved them out so that they are directly under the frame rails. I built the 2x2 mounts and notched the rear of them to clear the bulge in the bottom of the frame rail directly behind the rear K-member bolt.

You get the idea of the wider width right here.

I mounted it to a stock K-member and tacked it up in order to fit it under the car and then I'll check the depth of the center piece. I think it might be hanging an inch or so too low so I'll have to see how much I can trim and move that up. I can't get carried away as I'll have to hang the rack on it and if it's too high, it'll have bump steer issues.

Thanks. I'm sure I'll have a bunch of money in this thing, but I've been collecting parts for a while, even before I had the car, to build this thing, so the cost has been spread out. It also helps that I can do most of this work myself. I have a certain look in mind, and hopefully, it turns out that way. It'll be fun to have a superbird that I can drive everywhere, beat on without mercy, and not worry about scratches, dings, or dents.

Every part of this build is too cool. Your K member mods definitely interest me.

I have an AlterKtion in my other car. The design has the 2x2 laterals mounted inboard and then the motor mounts are attached to those. Since I'm using a motor plate, I won't need the mounts there so I moved the laterals outward. This will give more room for the low mounted A/C compressor I want to use and also allowed me to lower the engine some.

Awesome work there Hemirunner!

So forgive the newbie question: How did you get the square stock bent to the correct U shape? Do you have a machine that bends it? Obviously, the radius on each side needs to match perfectly and start in the perfect spot or it wont be level at the bottom and/or might be too wide or narrow. Obviously, it is spot on, but I imagine there is a little more to it than "I just threw it together". I appreciate it you'd be willing to enlighten some of us on how that is done...

Great project, and I obviously have much to learn!!!

Thanks,

Hawk

I just want to say WOW!!! I am no purist by a long shot. Don't get me wrong, I love a good over resto, the trailer queen just does nothing for me. I respect what I see you doing here, and love the concept. No sheet! This is like some car **** wet dream that is the way a car like tis SHOULD be. I love my NA sixpack e body (don't hate me, it ain't original...) BUT what you have done and the plan is awesome! I will be following with bait on my breath.
With thumbs up,

Hey Hawk,
I have a buddy who works at a CNC tube bending shop!LOL I gave him the dimensions and he bent up the tube for me. I remembered after I tacked it together that he said the ends might be a half inch or so long. I'll have to check it. Ooops.

Thanks. Hopefully this build lives up to your expectations and mine. Either way when it's done, I'm gonna beat it to within an inch of it's life on the drag strip!:headbang:

Damn brother you don't mess around! That 70 is seriously Badda$$

C&S Facebook had pics of a Mustang with a Dyno sheet showing 1600 HP off a small block..... I was guessing that's the aforementioned :)

Yeah, that's it. Roger and Chase both came up for the dyno. We're going down there soon and we're gonna put it on the chassis dyno and then take it to the track.

Had to cut 1-1/2" off the bent lower piece of the crossmember. I tried notching it at first to add a little strength, but that didn't work out so I just cut it off flush.

I tacked it back up and test fit it again. I like it better. I'd rather have it another 1-1/2" shorter, but the rack mounts won't allow it. It will serve as the lowest thing on the car and will probably get a skid plate. I've been known to need them.

The fit to the frame is pretty good.

I then finished welding the crossmember to the sides while it was on the car. It fits right back on after welding. That's a plus!

With that done, I stepped over to my plasma table building (translation: I called a buddy and recalled a favor and he cut these) and zipped out some lower control arm mounts. The little step in them clears the frame rail as the 2x2 laterals sit inward just about .100" or so.

Booom!!.......the tops of the brackets are the shock mounts. They'll get welded to a profiled backer that will pull the two brackets together at the top and form the shock mount. I'm still debating whether or not to lengthen these to run a longer shock and have more shock travel. We'll be running 2" drop spindles to get the front down so I'm not sure yet what's needed.
3CBFCA37-B055-4A72-9C1F-09C36F2F02DF_zpses9l9auz.jpg

The brackets will have a tube welded through the holes. It will contain the lower pivot shaft like the AlterKtion. Unlike the AlterKtion, mine will be shorter. It will have slip on spacers on the ends like a fox body mustang to allow the lower control arm to be moved forward and backward some. This will make it easier to dial in more caster for high speed stability. I thought about modifying this design into a front strut conversion, but the rules for most of these classes prohibit it.

and the other....

Looks to me like you must have been tossing around some pretty cool custom fab work in your head for quite some time on this car. Loving every minute of this (But hurry up so you can get to the engine!! bahaha)

I have wanted to build this for years. I started planning the car while collecting parts and looking for a suitable donor car. I had considered modifying my green 70RR but it's just too nice to cut up. This car has been wrecked and it would be a huge undertaking to restore so it makes a good platform for this. I have been working on the engine all along and I'm currently welding up my own dry sump oil pan, but we'll get to that part later, lol.
