I will do. It's going to be next year for sure. Even if it looks like the Joe Dirt Daytona, LOL>

I started laying out my oil pan. I wanted some heavy duty rails and nothing is more frustrating than an oil pan that won't seal up. I used 3/8"x1" material for this. You can see the notch for the dipstick. This started out as a wet sump oil pan, but as the build progressed, it turned into a dry sump so that will get welded up.

I started with the rear panel cut out in the shape of the profile of the pan and welded it in place. Then I added the two sides. I only have a 175Amp TIG welder, so it's difficult to weld the heavier pieces to the thin ones.

By now, you're probably thinking that "this guys was just doing the K-member and now he's making an oil pan" and you would be right. I needed the K-member done enough to bolt it in and check clearance for the oil pan front.

This shape will allow the scavenge pickups to mount on the oil pump side. It'll have 3 stages of suction and 1 pressure.

Nobody will ever be impressed by my TIG welding, least of all me, but it's getting better. I'll probably just cartridge roll the welds and blend them in.

I wanted a rolled nose on the front of the pan so since we're "broke as a joke fabrications", we enlisted our high dollar plate roller....

Love watching the fabrication!

Thanks Guys, keep the comments coming, I appreciate the feedback.

I cut out the flat panel that I rolled and cut the front corners out. Then I welded the whole bottom on.

The other side was much more complex and I ran into a little contamination that junked up the weld. I may have to blend that weld in and go over it or weld out the inside which might be cheap insurance against leaks anyway.

It has a nice compact size to it and clears my K-member. At least I won't shave the bottom off the pan as I've done to so many wet sumps over the years! I still need to patch those front corners.

Here's the first corner patch.

This side looks like the low milodon dragster wet sump pan.

Second patch in and the exterior nearly done. I need to add the three suction ports using aluminum bungs and fix a couple areas of contaminated weld. Then I'll have to move to the interior where it needs divider panels over each main cap, a crank scraper and a screen.

It looks like my car stuff is over for the weekend as the wife wants the riding mower fixed!! LOL....

Nothing wrong with your welds..you haven't seen mine lol. Looking good!

I bet you still have a smile on your face and the hair on your neck is still raised from that wide open throttle ride this morning, lol.

I think it turned out good. So this is going to be a dry sump? Are you building the tank too? I've heard there's baffling that needs to be built in so it works ok.

Yep great ride today. Swapped in some 9's and all is good. Lol yeah WOT is something else!

Great to hear. Yes, this will be a dry sump. I'm not sure if I'm going to buy one or build one. I'm pretty familiar with them after having used them on several engines. If I mount the tank in the engine bay, I'll probably buy a nice looking one.

With the outside of the pan welded up, I decided to weld up the inside as even more protection against leaks and so oil couldn't get into the weld joints so as not to be a problem if I have to repair it in the future.

I also ordered a length of aluminum tubing, 1-1/4" OD and 1" ID, as well as three -12AN O-ring fittings to make up the scavenge pickups. I tapped the ends of these tubes 1-1/16-12 to receive the o-ring fittings.

To keep any trash from going through the dry sump pump, I ordered these screens from Fragola. The fittings need counterboard to receive them and they get pressed in.

Three .810" counter bores later and they're ready to go. I put the fittings in my pizza oven to heat them up. This opens up the bore so I can press the screens in.

I cut the pan to accept the pickup tubes. I also cut the part of the tube that extends into the pan in half. This will form the floor of the sump and the start of the divider baffle in each area. You'll see how this works out once I show the inside of the pan. The bad spots on the weld are from contamination. Apparently the flap disc I used had been used on steel. Carbon contamination is a huge problem when welding aluminum.

I installed the other two pickup tubes. You can see with the front two pickup tubes, the back of the tube forms the separating wall between the sump stages and this wall will get extended up. On the rear tube, the leftover part of the tube forms a baffle to catch the oil and keep it from rolling up the rear wall of the pan under acceleration. I still have to finish weld the rear two tubes on the inside.

With the outside welded up, I started smoothing the exterior. I haven't decided to polish it or just leave it a brushed finish.

That's some slick fabrication there hemirunner, looking forward to watching your build.

Thanks Riverdawg. I'd rather just buy one, but they're $750 with the fittings and I've got $100 total in this one so far. The tanks are another $600 so I'll be building one of those as well.
